While the Super Bowl LVIII is at the center of attention, Mac Jones is having a turbulent time at New England Patriots. The Patriots didn’t have a great 2023 season and finished 4th in the AFC East. And Jones’ struggles continued for the third straight season. And if the reports are to be believed, they could part ways soon.

Jones was drafted by the Patriots in 2020 for 4 seasons, with an option of an additional season as well. However, given the 25-year-old’s struggles, 2024 could be his last season. But his presence in the 2024 season also seems very unlikely as per the latest update.

Mac Jones: walking away from the Pats?

According to the latest update, New England Patriots‘ quarterback Mac Jones ‘is a trade candidate’ and if suitable deals arrive, he could well be on his way out. Jones was benched several times last season, and with no sight of form, he could end up in a different team in the coming weeks. “Even though Bill Belichick is gone, …Mac Jones — who lost the starting role and ended up third string by the end of the 2023 season — is a trade candidate in the coming weeks and most likely will end up elsewhere for the 2024 season“, NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed.

The 2024 season would have marked the final year of Jones’ contract, which is worth $15.6 million. Despite him having a clean slate with the head coach Jerod Mayo, the Patriots team management ‘won’t hesitate to move him if the right deal comes across their desk’. In the 11 appearances last season, Jones threw for 2,120 yards and managed to score 10 touchdowns. He also made 12 interceptions with a  64.9 completion percentage. But as he falls from the Patriots’ plan, Jones is hopeful of better times.

Mac Jones’ best NFL season marked his rookie year where he recorded 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 17 games. It was a good debut season for him but what transpired in the next two seasons has left his future hanging. However, he doesn’t think so and is taking inspiration from NFL stars who had a similar start to their career including quarterback Geno Smith.

The quarterback has even spoken about Geno Smith’s journey and relayed inside Gillette Stadium to one source that his path might be like the veteran quarterback“, NFL reporter Mark Daniels reported. Smith struggled for over a decade before getting the starting place in 2022 at Seattle Seahawks. So, even if he is traded to a different team, Jones won’t mind a change of scenery.
