The Los Angeles Rams now sit at 5-2 after a dominant 35-7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. And once again, quarterback Matthew Stafford looked like an MVP candidate. He threw five touchdowns, tying his career high, and commanded the field with ease. But the 37-year-old didn’t just surprise the Jaguars, he also caught his own head coach off guard in the funniest way.

Recently, Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed the full story during The Rich Eisen Show. “We went to do a walkthrough at Wembley, and obviously the Jags go play there,” McVay shared. There were a lot of Jags fans too, so instead of heavy work, he wanted to do some cool trick plays.
“This just feels a little weird. I said, why don’t you make up a cool play, make up a cool trick play, Matthew. He makes up a trick play in about 10 seconds. And I’m thinking to myself, Rich, it shows you really what an idiot I am. That would have me 8 hours to come up with on a Tuesday. He comes up with an intense second. I’m thinking, man, I really don’t know what my value is here when we’ve got a guy like him, but it truly is a collaboration.”

Looking back at that Jags game, Stafford’s talent was visible. He went 21-of-33 for 182 yards. And yes, he’s building real chemistry with the young guys. Interestingly, in last 4 games, he’s thrown 12 touchdowns with zero interceptions. However, McVay knows the clock doesn’t stop forever.
“He’s done a great job of taking care of himself. He is feeling good, but he’s in total command and this guy enjoys the game,” McVay said. Then he added, “He’s a stud, and I’m certainly grateful. And I’m a cherish every moment for however long he wants to play.”

Earlier this offseason, the Rams let Mattthew Stafford’s camp explore his value in the market while working toward a restructured deal. Eventually, both sides agreed on a revised two-year, $84 million contract. Now, that decision might complicate things.

Matthew Stafford contract situation
Right now, Matthew Stafford’s contract locks him in through the 2026 season with a $40 million cap hit next year. So, there’s room for both Stafford and the Rams to revisit the situation this offseason. In fact, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler highlighted that Stafford is looking for a potential new deal.

Fowler explained that if Stafford continues to dominate, the conversation could heat up again.
Despite the occasional tension, the relationship has worked well, keeping both sides happy while giving the Rams stability at quarterback. “His deal probably needs to be addressed in some form, but both parties have played this perfectly, creating a sometimes uneasy but ultimately flourishing relationship,” the analyst wrote.
And of course, Stafford himself has shared that he’s eager to keep playing in Los Angeles. He sees his role as one of the most important on the field, and he feels valued in the league. On “The Morning After” podcast, he said, “It’s a valued position in our league. And so anytime there’s even perceived availability, it’s going to draw attention. But yeah, it’s humbling.”
He also acknowledged the rare opportunity he has at this stage of his career. “‘You’re 37 years old, going into your 17th NFL season, and somebody still wants you to be on their team.’ And that’s a rare occurrence and something I don’t take for granted, I don’t take lightly.”
So he feels he can still make an impact and lead a team like the Rams.
