The Los Angeles Rams’ win over the Texans came at a cost, as offensive lineman Steve Avila suffered an ankle sprain that sidelined him for Week 2. Labeled “week-to-week,” Avila has shown encouraging progress, but with Week 3 approaching, his availability against the Eagles remains uncertain. When asked about his status, coach Sean McVay gave a cautious response.

McVay had no definitive timeline for Avila’s recovery but praised the player who stepped in during his absence. “No, I’m not sure. I think it’ll be a week-to-week situation. He seemed encouraged by how he felt afterward and is making good progress today, but we’ll take it one day at a time. I thought Justin Dedich stepped up and did a really nice job yesterday,” McVay said.

If Avila cannot return in Week 3, Justin Dedich is likely to continue starting at left guard. However, questions remain about Avila’s role if his absence extends, especially since he missed seven games last season due to injury.

When healthy, Steve Avila has proven his value to the Rams. In 2023, he played all 17 games and took every offensive snap at left guard. Following that season, the team transitioned him to a new role. Last year, coach Sean McVay moved Avila from guard to center within the revamped offensive line. This new role came with added responsibility, requiring Avila to work closely with quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Jonah Jackson, who took over the left guard spot, observed Avila’s transition and was highly impressed. “Moving to center, you have to break down a defense like that, understand IDs and rotations and everything. I think he’s coming along great, especially for a second-year guy. This was a fast flip for him—he probably expected to stay at guard until free agency, but he’s doing incredible. He’s lightning quick with his calls. He’s a damn good player,” Jackson said.

While Avila has demonstrated his value on the Rams’ roster, his future hinges on his recovery timeline and how Justin Dedich performs in his absence.

Will Justin Dedich play in Week 3 for the Rams?

Justin Dedich had a strong showing in Week 2, missing only three pass blocks during the game. His performance reflects the resilience he’s shown throughout his unconventional journey to the NFL. Despite going undrafted in 2024 after six years of playing multiple positions in college, Dedich quickly proved his worth. The Rams initially signed him as an undrafted free agent, released him during roster cuts, and then re-signed him to the practice squad before elevating him to the active roster.

In October of last year, Dedich earned his first NFL start against the Raiders, allowing no sacks or pressures on 24 true drop backs. His second start against the Vikings was just as impressive. Known for his relentless work ethic and reliability, Dedich has earned high praise from both teammates and coaches.

Whether Dedich starts in Week 3 will largely depend on Steve Avila’s injury status and how quickly he can return to full health.
