Odafe Oweh’s trade to the Los Angeles Chargers opens the door for Tavius Robinson to step into a more pivotal pass-rush role. Oweh was selected in the first round in 2021 and recorded a career-high 10 sacks in 2024. However, he recorded only 45% of defensive snaps and 10 total tackles this season. Podcaster Kevin Oestreicher, speaking about Odafe Oweh’s negative plays, said, “He did look invisible,” hinting towards his zero sack streak in five games. It looks like Baltimore needs to rely on its young edge options, as per a former NFL player.

Qadry Ismail supported the Baltimore Ravens’ decision to trade on the podcast Locked on Ravens and said, “Now, you look at Tavius Robinson. Tavius Robinson has been playing. I think he’s played sporadically at times as well. I think that there have been some incomplete plays that Tavius would have loved to have played better and had back. But at least we’re seeing him do something.”

The 2023 fourth-round pick has flashed the kind of athleticism that earns praise in quiet moments. As a linebacker, his ideal instinct involves tackling, sacking the quarterback, and defending against passes, not throwing them. This season, Tavius Robinson, as a defensive linebacker, has 17 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 forced fumble.

The trade eliminates Odafe Oweh’s function to draw attention and adds to Tavius Robinson’s responsibilities. To establish himself as a vital defensive component, he must demonstrate steady impact and fast adaptation.

This reflects the prospects of numbers growing with more involvement during the game, as Robinson is no longer a low-leverage depth piece. Subsequently, the Ravens’ midseason move has altered the locker room’s dynamic, especially among other linebackers. Kyle Van Noy described that the decision hit hard emotionally.

Van Noy sees Odafe Oweh trade as a turning point ahead of Rams matchup

Sending Odafe Oweh to the Los Angeles Chargers and acquiring Alohi Gilman before their game against the Los Angeles Rams was a wake-up call for younger players, and outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy himself.

“First, I am always thinking about the person. Let’s take football out of it. A lot goes into it when you get traded. I’ve been traded personally, and it puts you in a little bit of a shock. And I’m sure Odafe was able to text real quick. Hopefully, we’ll have a conversation. I want him to obviously get settled,” Van Noy said, acknowledging the shock that comes with being traded.

Gilman has a strong record when he gets to Baltimore. He has made five starts for the Chargers in 2025, recording 22 tackles and three passes defensed. He has accumulated 252 tackles, five interceptions, and four forced fumbles in his six-year career. Gilman has continued to be effective in coverage and stabilizes the secondary against the Rams.

“He’s a very good football player, and I’m excited for him to come into our locker room and be a leader right away and get to work. I don’t know, but hopefully he’s up on Sunday to help us out,” Kyle Van Noy added. The linebacker is confident about Gilman’s potential.

For one season, Gilman and Kyle Van Noy were teammates with the Chargers, and Van Noy is certain that Gilman’s presence will improve the defense. Van Noy expects Gilman will quickly adapt under his experienced leadership with a new defensive identity and a renewed sense of urgency.
