With the 2024 NFL Draft having closed, no team seems as happy as the Broncos for drafting quarterback, Bo Nix into their team. After all, the team was short a QB after Russell Wilson was fired from the team earlier in the year. While coach, Sean Payton claimed to have a “good relationship” with the 35-year-old, that did not ring true in the player’s goodbye to the beloved team.

Now, an NFL analyst has shared his thoughts on why he believes that Payton has finally got the quarterback that he has been waiting for.

Peter Schrager shared a clip from the draft coverage. During the conversation, he stated that while Bo Nix might be a talented player, people would try to bring him down because he was the 6th QB to be picked in the draft. However, he also added, “Sean Payton has been waiting for his quarterback. Russell Wilson was not his quarterback. Let’s assume he puts all his energy towards making Bo Nix the best NFL player he could be, I think it’s a good fit.”

Schrager also stated that Nix was the most “accurate passer in the draft” and that could be an advantage for the Broncos. The 24-year-old pick might have come a little late. However, he wound up exactly where he had wanted to be. While the former Oregon star may be Payton’s up-and-coming star, his numerous similarities to Russell Wilson might make the two an unlikely pairing.

After all, things with the coach and Wilson seemed to get out of hand after their little sideline tiff last year. Although Payton might have sought Nix because of his tremendous passing abilities, it was one of his similarities to the 31-year-old. While the 60-year-old was excited for the former QB to join his team initially, two years in, his patience wore a little too thin.

That does not seem to be the case with Nix, as both he and Payton seemed to bond well during the NFL Combine earlier this year. However, their relationship might unravel on the field, kind of like the coach’s partnership with Wilson.

Why Russell Wilson was not the QB Sean Payton wanted in the Broncos?

In 2022, the Denver Broncos stunned everyone when they acquired Russell Wilson from the Seahawks. While it was a dream come true for most, it did not last long. During his first season with Sean Payton and the rest of the team, the 31-year-old fell short of what was expected of a $235 million salaried player. Although he had a second chance in the next season, it wound up worse than before.

With Wilson losing his cool at Payton from the sidelines of a match, his fate was sealed. The QB wound up being benched for the rest of the season and was fired soon after despite his contract. Things might have worked out a little differently if the 31-year-old had lessened his on field injuries and had been more consistent with following through on the coach’s play.

Although Wilson did not last with the Broncos for very long, there seems to be more hope for his successor, Bo Nix. After all, Payton seems to have high hopes for the young star.
