Veteran quarterback Derek Carr didn’t leave football on his own, his wife Heather had long urged him to walk away. After years of pain, surgeries, and silent Monday mornings where he couldn’t get out of bed without help, Carr finally listened. Leaving behind $30 million wasn’t easy, but Heather was done with the burden she’d been silently carrying.

Of course, it was probably the hardest decision of his life, but one that had to be made. “It wasn’t easy, I promise. It was hard. When I talked to my wife, she was ready for me to be done whenever I was ready. She saw things that no one else saw. You know, waking up on Monday mornings, and I can’t walk, and I have to call her to get me out of bed. She was done,” Carr said.
With a supportive partner by his side, the decision became easier. For Carr, his wife Heather stood by him every step. On his first day of retirement, she shared moments of him working out with their four kids, then heading out for a date. And that probably made giving up the $30 million worth it.

After signing a four-year, $150 million contract with the Saints in 2023, which included $30 million guaranteed for the 2025 season, things quickly unraveled. Late in the 2024 season, Carr missed the final four games with a concussion and a left-hand injury. Then came the offseason, and it got worse, pain in his throwing shoulder led to tests revealing a torn labrum and severe rotator cuff damage, confirmed by the team.

According to the Saints, Carr could’ve gone under the knife, but surgery would’ve likely cost him the entire 2025 season. And even then, there was no promise he’d ever get back to his old level of strength and performance.
Many players step away from the game early because their passion fades, but that was never true for Carr. His love for football remained as strong as ever.
The legacy Derek Carr left behind
For Carr, the real struggle wasn’t turning down $30 million, it was letting go of the game that had shaped nearly every part of his life. “For me, as a competitor, and my love, honestly, I love the game so much. I just love football. I think it’s great for character. It’s great for everybody. It’s team, it’s unity. All the things I believe in. But to say no to the money part of it? I had to die to myself on that one,” he said.

Carr realized that chasing money wasn’t the right choice for him anymore, because emotionally and mentally, he wasn’t ready to keep playing. “I had to be like, what’s the right thing to do, all that. Because, on the inside, you’re like, ‘Well, it’s easy. I’ll just make that money and go.’ But it just wasn’t right, because I wasn’t ready,” he added.

The 34-year-old’s love for football was never in question, you saw it in every tight spiral and every fired-up celebration. A four-time Pro Bowler, Carr closed out his career with 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, 112 interceptions, and a 92.8 quarterback rating over 169 games. He’d already said enough with the way he played.
And he probably doesn’t miss that lost money too much. When Carr walked away from the game after 11 seasons with the Raiders and the Saints, he had racked up well over $205 million.
