The Seattle Seahawks’ upcoming home game might have to be rescheduled due to the Mariners’ American League West title game. The two teams’ stadiums, T-Mobile Park and Lumen Field, are located just a short walk apart. If the Mariners host playoff games at the same time as the Seahawks’ games on October 5 and October 20, it could create major traffic and crowd issues. To prevent this, city officials and team management are planning for potential schedule adjustments as per Adam Schefter’s report.

The Seahawks will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 5. For this game, the MLB hasn’t made a decision yet, but they are expected to share on Friday (October 3). Now, as per reports, if the time for the games were to clash, Seattle might have to delay their games by 90 to 150 minutes.

A similar conflict could happen on Oct. 20, too, when they meet the Houston Texans. This is when Game 7 of the AL Championship Series is set. That same night, the Seahawks are scheduled to play the Texans at 7 p.m. However, for this conflict, the Mariners would have win the American League Division series. Also, the ALCS has to go the full seven games, and they might not be facing an AL East champ like the Blue Jays or Yankees.

But if they play the AL Central winner or a Wild Card team, then Seattle would get that Game 7 at home. Unless that plays out, the team can rest assured they won’t be dealing with the same issue as this. Now, this isn’t new.

The Seattle Seahawks have been in this situation before

Both teams faced a scheduling conflict back in 2022. This was related to a potential Game 4 in the Mariners’ playoff series against the Houston Astros. However, the Mariners never reached Game 4, so a clash with the Seahawks’ game against the Arizona Cardinals, scheduled for 1:05 p.m. local time, was avoided.

Even back then, the teams took steps to prevent chaos, preparing to push back the Seahawks’ kickoff by 85 minutes to a 2:30 p.m. But the Mariners’ series didn’t last long enough for the delay to come into effect. The Baltimore Ravens, however, weren’t that lucky in 2013.

The Ravens had to start their season on the road because the Orioles refused to move the start time of their September 5 home game against the White Sox. This broke a long-standing tradition where defending Super Bowl champions opened at home. While there were negotiations between the Orioles, MLB, the NFL, and the Ravens, traffic issues, parking, and fan safety made it impossible.

While such schedule overlaps are uncommon, both teams and city officials are taking necessary precautions to make sure that safety isn’t compromised.
