The Los Angeles Rams are facing a daunting task: replacing the irreplaceable! The 8x first-team All-Pro Aaron Donald’s retirement has left ‘holes’ on the Rams’ defensive line. While acknowledging this helluva task ahead, head coach Sean McVay believes he has identified a potential successor in nose tackle, Kobie Turner.

“It was an amazing opportunity to work with him for seven years,” McVay said of Donald in a recent tweet from the Up and Adams Show. “But I think Kobie Turner, now going into his second year—he’s the guy to fill the holes.” High praise indeed for a player who, in his rookie season, led all NFL defensive rookies with 9 sacks. The Rams’ HC emphasized how Turner is a “really special player and could be a leader on this team.”

McVay isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket, though. He’s also high on Bobby Brown III (drafted 117th overall in 2021), who’s ready to “take the next step,” and rookie Braden Fiske (drafted 39th overall this year), who has impressed in his early days with the team. “We have these guys on the edges who are ready to take the next steps, and I’m excited to see how our defense comes together,” coach McVay said.

While these young talents hold strong potential, replacing Aaron Donald is somewhat difficult. The seven-time Defensive Player of the Year was a generational talent who dominated the line of scrimmage like few others. “It’s not ever gonna look the same as what #99 did,” the 38-year-old admitted. “But we’re still a really good defense with 11 playing as one.”

The Rams will undoubtedly rely on a committee approach to replace Donald’s production. Turner, with his explosive first season, appears to be the early frontrunner to carry the torch. While McVay and the Rams are pumped about the future, Aaron Donald’s retirement is going to hit hard.

Aaron Donald’s retirement and his unmatched league dominance

Aaron Donald’s 10-year NFL career is officially over. The 33-year-old was a beast—power, speed, and technique all rolled into one. Ex-Rams’ DC Raheem Morris even said Donald’s in the same league as legends like Lawrence Taylor and ‘Mean’ Joe Greene. Morris highlighted, “He’s one of one. His impact on the game, the inside, the stats… legendary!”

The stats are totally legendary indeed. With 111 sacks—a Rams record—Donald was a Pro Bowler every season and a first-team All-Pro eight times. “You’ve got to put him up with the likeliness of Hall of Famers… he’s in that walk of life,” said the former Rams’ DC. Donald played 10 seasons and was a Defensive Rookie of the Year in each.

As the league adjusts to life without him, Donald’s legacy is set to inspire for years to come.
