The 2024 NFL Draft predictions made way for a good deal of accuracy in ground reality. Rumors held the Minnesota Vikings leaning heavily to acquire JJ McCarthy, which they proved true by trading up and acquiring the quarterback at No. 10 overall after swapping their picks with the New York Jets. The result could have come as a blow to Sean Payton of the Denver Broncos, who also reportedly had his eyes set on the same player.

In a twist, however, the head coach hinted that he simply played coy and baited the Vikings to make the move so that he could safely land Bo Nix. In a press conference at the end of the first day, Payton stated, “I was actively involved in trying to pretend we were moving forward,” with a wide smirk on his face. Thus, the narrative, as per him, comes forth that the Broncos never had an interest in McCarthy anyway and simply hyped it up for a strategic move.

In similar moves before, Payton focused on transforming the Denver Broncos’ offensive line. As part of his wit, he brought in Zach Strief as the line coach, as well as Mike McGlinchey and Ben Powers. With his offensive approach focusing on quick, short passes and sack avoidance, his acquisition of Nix for the incoming season should be of good reason in a top-heavy draft.

Regardless, the rationale behind the coach’s decision could have several players, with the major emphasis coming on their differences in playing styles.

Why did Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos settle on Bo Nix over JJ McCarthy?

Sean Payton has crafted an offense that requires a quarterback who can make quick decisions, avoid negative plays, and execute a variety of throws. In this regard, Bo Nix shines with his pressure composure and other traits, such as his arm strength and mobility. While JJ McCarthy also showcases similar characteristics along with determined competitiveness, slight concerns did float around his maneuverability in getting through progressions and scramble escape ability.

The Michigan quarterback has found ample praise for his playing style involving a pro-style passing scheme and compact delivery. Additionally, he has set program records for the lowest career interception percentage and career completion percentage. Yet, on the other side with the Broncos pick, Bo Nix has immense experience in his favor with 61 games across five collegiate seasons, a 77.4% completion rate, 4,508 passing yards, and 45 touchdowns, sealing his deal with Payton.
