The Denver Broncos arguably had a poor season last time. With Sean Payton holding the command, and Russell Wilson’s exit, the franchise needs to work on its multiple broken pieces to make their mark next season.

As Payton wants to rebuild the team, they will be wishing for the miracle that happened with the Houston Texans last year. The NFL analysts discussed this one key factor for their turnaround in the league, revealing the Broncos’ state.

The Texans are a relatively young team, having been around for just over twenty years. Despite their short history, they have already gone to multiple major rebuilds. In the last five years alone, the team has undergone significant changes.

Among them, one notable change was in the last year, when the Texans probably made the franchise’s biggest move in the draft. They drafted CJ Stroud as the second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. And in the first year, Stroud took the NFL by storm. This is what the Broncos are expecting today. In a latest episode of DNVR Sports, Zac Stevens and Henry Chisholm talked about the Broncos’ first and foremost need, i.e. a game-changing quarterback.

Stevens expressed, “I think they can have this same turnaround that the Texans had. There’s obviously one massive thing that they have to do and it’s a lot easier said than done, and that is to land the next CJ Stroud. And the success CJ Stroud had last year as a rookie is rare, but if anyone is going to do it, it’s going to be Sean Payton with this good offensive line in front of him.

They mentioned that the Broncos have a solid offensive line, which ESPN ranked as one of the best even before adding Sam Mustipher. While there’s still a question mark at the center position, the Broncos are actively working to address it by adding new players.

With Sean Payton leading the team, Stevens believes that the Broncos have a good chance of having a rookie quarterback perform well in their system.

The Broncos really need a top-tier quarterback, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be a flashy or super athletic player. What’s important is finding someone who fits well into Sean Payton’s offensive system. Historically, Payton prefers quarterbacks who excel at passing from the pocket, making precise throws to their playmakers. While having a quarterback who can also run is a bonus, it’s not essential for Payton’s style of play. Looking back at Russell Wilson’s time with the Broncos in 2023, he put up good stats, but much of his performance felt lacking in substance.

So, if the Broncos choose a rookie QB in the 2024 NFL Draft, they might end up with a less exciting prospect. This means they’re unlikely to get high-profile players like Caleb Williams or Jayden Daniels. Instead, someone like Bo Nix from Oregon could be a solid chance. Nix may not make flashy plays like Williams, but he’s consistent, accurate, and knows how to manage the game from the pocket. While some may find this style boring, if Nix performs well and leads the Broncos to success, it shouldn’t matter.

The priority should be finding a quarterback who can effectively run Payton’s offense, regardless of how exciting they may be to watch.
