Mike Macdonald punched his ticket into a new home and in the league’s history. After serving for 14 seasons, the 72-year-old, Pete Carroll, was released as the HC from the Seattle Seahawks earlier in January. Now the franchise has set its eyes on the Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator.

Carroll’s task was to win, but he couldn’t meet that expectation enough in recent seasons, especially considering the high standards set in the early years of his coaching, such as leading the team to their only Super Bowl. The Hawks finished off this season with 9 wins and 8 losses. Additionally, they finished the 2022 and 2023 seasons without beating any of the biggest rivals. Therefore, the team released Carroll from the HC role, and since then, they have been searching for a new coach. Now the wait is finally over!

Mike Macdonald confirmed as the new head coach of the Seahawks!

The Seattle Seahawks have hired Baltimore Ravens DC Mike Macdonald as their new head coach. The franchise announced on Wednesday, giving him a six-year contract. He will be replacing long-time head coach Pete Carroll. The Seahawks earlier in January confirmed that they were looking for a new HC as Carroll had discontinued the position. Carroll, however, will be serving as an adviser for the team.

With this role, the 36-year-old Macdonald became the youngest coach in the league. Known for delivering one of the best defensive strategies, Macdonald has helped the Ravens achieve top-ranking points allowed (16.5), sacks (60), and takeaways (31) in the 2023 season, and would look to take the same forward to the Seahawks.

After being hired in the new team, Macdonald expressed his excitement and honor upon arriving at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. As he and his wife, Stephanie, were greeted by the team, Macdonald said, “We are super excited to be here. Just getting to know John and the rest of the folks, the reputation of this place, what drew us here was the people. That’s why we’re here, to bring a championship back to Seattle and the 12s.”

He further added, “We’re going to have a lot of fun, we’re going to work our tails off, and it’s going to be an incredible ride. We’re going to be here for a long time, and we’re going to win a lot of football games.” Macdonald will now be aiming to propel the franchise forward and uphold its positive culture. But will he be a good fit for the team?

Is Mike Macdonald a good choice for the Hawks?

The Seahawks faced a challenge in regaining their past success, especially against NFC West rivals like the 49ers and Rams, who are coached by offensive geniuses Kyle Shanahan and Mike LaFleur, respectively. The Hawks needed to decide whether to hire a coach focused on offense to match the scoring abilities of opponents or a defensive coach to counter their strategies. With Lions OC Ben Johnson out of consideration, hiring defensive-minded Macdonald became an obvious choice. He led a top-notch defense in recent seasons and has the potential to enhance Seattle’s defensive performance.

Despite struggles in the past two seasons, Macdonald’s success with the Ravens defense, including player improvements and breakout seasons, indicates positive changes for Seattle’s defense. The Seahawks may benefit from Macdonald’s coaching, especially with existing talent like cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who has shown great promise, being no. 1 amongst rookie defenders, with 16 pass deflections.

The fans are now awaiting the Hawks’ 2024 season and how Macdonald will help succeed the team in rankings.
