Since the Cowboys traded for George Pickens, a lot of things are flying in the air. Some experts say that the Cowboys invited the wrong guy, while others are happy that Dallas has got a star. But if you do the analysis of both sides while keeping the 2025 NFL season center point, we can see there is going to be some problem with the Cowboys and the head coach Brian Schottenheimer. What’s the problem and headache?
Well, this was beautifully explained by Albert Breer when he was on Colin Cowherd’s podcast on May 8. When Cowherd asked how the season was going to be for the Cowboys as the offensive side added George Pickens, Breer pointed out, “I mean that’s to me is like why Brian Shottenheimer is a really important figure here. It’s like this is what you’ve put at the doorstep for your first year as head coach, and how is that going to be handled?” He also added, “It’s more difficult when you know you’re playing for playoff position in October and November, and maybe the best thing for the team is to keep feeding the ball to CD Lamb, and the best thing for the team is for George Pickens to be a decoy.” But what he said after this was really important for the Cowboys’ upcoming season.

Breer further said, “I think he [Brian Schottenheimer] will do a great job building a culture there. You know, one of his first jobs now is to make sure that everything is clear with the receiver room as to the roles that they’re going to play, how that could play out over the course of the year.” Yeah, this is going to be a real headache because Pickens often stirs up skirmishes out of nowhere, and that disrupts the locker room atmosphere.
2025 is going to be the first year of Brian Schottenheimer as the Cowboys’ head coach of the team. Though he has been in the franchise since 2022 and has managed positions as offensive coordinator. However, coordinating CeeDee, Dak, and Pickens will be the hardest job. Let’s see how the new head coach gonna carve out a way in this. Meanwhile, there is another headache waiting for the Cowboys as Pickens is entering the house.
Hold on… another headache on the way from George Pickens loading
If we just take a sip of water and think, why did Mike Tomlin want George Pickens gone? And the answer to this question is surely gonna be a huge concern for Brian Schottenheimer’s team and his operations. You know, Pickens is known for his frequent violations of the NFL rules, taunting the opposing team’s player, and inviting a fine. And along with this, he also has many off-the-field issues that Schottenheimer has to understand and tolerate while moving with Pickens.

Will George Pickens' fiery nature ignite the Cowboys' offense or burn bridges in the locker room?

On May 7, a Pittsburgh reporter, Gerry Dulac, revealed why Mike wanted to move on from George Pickens when he was on Dan Patrick’s show. “Repeated violations off the field, late for meetings, skipping meetings, late to games. It was just on and on, and it just got to the point where they weren’t, especially after they traded for DK Metcalf… They just weren’t going to tolerate it anymore,” the reporter said.

He also added, “When the aggravation outweighs the production, you get rid of them. And that’s what happens with George Pickens… They just thought that his teammates had a problem in the locker room. It became a problem with Mike Tomlin… It wasn’t just his on-field temperament and behavior.” That’s why when Jerry Jones‘s team traded for the WR, NFL teams laughed at it.

Well, this is shaping up to be another cause of concern for the head coach. The Cowboys need to rein in this horse. They need to find a way to channel his raw energy and aggression effectively into something productive on the field. It’s a critical point in the season, and distractions like this could derail their momentum. All eyes will be on how the coaching staff handles the situation moving forward. Let’s see what happens.
