The Indianapolis Colts owner and chairman Jim Irsay who took up the mettle from his father in 1997 also fought an uphill battle amid his addictions. In a recent interview with Real Sports he made a rather bold prediction.

His tryst with drug addiction is not hidden from the country. He even lost her mistress due to an overdose in a house that was purchased by him. During the same period, his connection to involvement in drug abuse came right in the open in 2014 when the Colts owner was found in possession of illicit drugs in Caramel, Indiana.

Jim Irsay got lucky because he signed the death certificate

64-year-old is spearheading the Colts with the same zeal and enthusiasm for close to 30 years. During this time he battled out with a major abuse problem. Irsay was also banned by the NFL for six games in 2014 citing the same reasons. He spent one year on probation too after pleading guilty to drug possession. He has always been vocal about his struggles and has advocated for mental half in the latter part of his life. Ari Meirov shared the clip on X where Irsay opened up on another traumatic experience that hit him pretty hard.

In an interview, Andrea Kremer asked Irsay “How many times you did go into rehab?” Irsay looked down and exclaimed, “Oh God, at least 15 times.” Kremer further questioned, “Have you ever overdosed?” Irsay admitted and remembered the event “I was trying to detox myself and I mixed you know multiple drugs that I didn’t know anything about”. Soon after he started stuttering and stopped breathing, he had to be revived and the doctor said to him “Jim you are one lucky man as I had signed the death certificate“.

That time would have left a deep impact on Irsay’s life for sure! Nevertheless, the Colts’ owner rose like a phoenix from the ashes.

Irsay’s journey is all about surrendering and becoming teachable

When Irsay went to rehab, his daughter was always there to support him at every step required. She even took over the day-to-day operations at the Colts when her father was not around. He fought a hard battle with his drug abuse and dealt with recurring relapses that made him go to rehab many times. Previously, Irsay spoke candidly about his struggles in a 2022 interview with The Associated Press. “My self-will had to be abandoned because my self-will was killing me.” He continued, “The only way I could be helped was to surrender and give way to become teachable and give way to some power greater than me.”

He has leaned on his personal experiences in establishing an initiative alongside the Colts to advocate for mental health awareness. Irsay, who boasts a net worth of $3.9 billion, has come a long way and rightly handling his day-to-day routines as the Colts have had a mixed bag of performances so far. The Colts have registered five wins from their ten matches. The Colts are right now relaxing through their bye week and will face the Bucs this Sunday at Lucas Oil Field.
