Star Center Jason Kelce Opens Up on the Controversial ‘Tush Push’ After Jalen Hurts and Eagles Demolished the Dolphins

In Week 7 of this NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Miami Dolphins 31-17. However, following the Eagles’ recent victory, the controversy surrounding the ‘tush push’ has again gained traction. The Eagles have mastered the art of the tush push, leading to calls from many individuals and rival team coaches to outlaw this technique.
While the NFL amended its rules in 2005 that prohibit offensive players from pushing others forward, the Eagles are not in violation of any regulations. Nevertheless, a faction within the NFL argues that the tush push unfairly tilts the game in favor of the Eagles. Earlier this week, Jason Kelce of the Eagles discussed this contentious issue with James Palmer on The NFL Report.
What does Jason have to say about the tush push?

The tush push is a technique where the ball carrier receives a push from behind to gain the necessary yardage. This approach closely resembles a rugby scrum. The Eagles have employed this strategy since last season, with Jalen Hurts benefitting from his teammates’ pushes, enabling him to pick up additional yards. No team has managed to devise a solution to counter this technique.
This is such great insight into why the #eagles are so dominant with this. And he’ll never say it, but Kelce is the main reason it’s so successful. https://t.co/q1wa8FrueW

In The NFL Report, Jason discussed how one can master this technique, offering a simple suggestion. To excel in it, you must dedicate extensive practice to it. Then, he added, “It’s a play that you get to rep a lot in practice, so each one of these reps in a game is a pretty substantial rep above the next opponent in terms of running the play in general.”

Jason explained that the tush push involves a group of players to execute, emphasizing that it’s not about one or two individuals. Jason said, “It’s important even in practice – especially before you run it in a game at all during the season or with a new quarterback – to really get that feeling down with the guy,” He added: “It’s not just the center-quarterback, it’s everybody across the board. How we’re hitting the blocks, where we’re starting, who’s working with who.”

Will the tush push really get banned in the NFL?
The Eagles are harnessing the tush push as one of their most potent weapons, much to the discontent of other teams. At the annual meeting in Indianapolis, the NFL’s Competition Committee deliberated the possibility of banning it, yet they did not propose any rule changes. It appears that unless the NFL officially introduces a rule against it, the Eagles have no intention of discontinuing the use of this technique.
The Eagles aren’t the first team to utilize this technique, yet none have achieved such remarkable success. The tush push boasts an almost 90% success rate for the Eagles. This season, teams like the Colts, Bears, and Giants attempted to employ it, but they have yet to achieve substantial success. A segment of the NFL believes that the tush push does not qualify as a football technique. However, the Eagles have a different perspective, contending that other teams fail to grasp that it’s not just the push that makes the difference but the player executing it.
