The Pittsburgh Steelers rolled into Week 2 feeling good after their season-opening win. But Sunday’s clash with the Seattle Seahawks turned into a nightmare.

Seattle outscored Pittsburgh 17-3 in the fourth quarter. By the final whistle, the Seahawks walked away with a solid 31-17 victory.

Right after the game, Steelers former head coach Bill Cowher opened up about what went wrong with Aaron Rodgers offense.

“Well, I mean, I think they did a lot of good things in Week One,” Cowher said on the Dan Patrick Show. “Certainly, a tough loss yesterday.”

Cowher’s message was clear—the offense wasn’t clicking the way it should. He also dove into the nitty-gritty of Rodgers’ struggles.

“I think again with that offense; there’s going to be some mistiming. You saw, I thought it was interesting. A lot of slants to DK Metcalf were behind him in the first week, which means Aaron’s trying to get a gauge for DK. This week, a couple were in front of him. So, there’s that timing element that just takes game time to figure out. Seeing who plays faster, who plays slower.”

Everyone expected some slants and fades from Rodgers, especially coming to Pittsburgh at age 41.

At the same time, it’s a story Rodgers knows well. Back when he played with Davante Adams, timing was everything. Now, DK Metcalf steps into that role.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf find their rhythm, or is this partnership doomed to fail?

Cowher pointed out that the Rodgers-Metcalf connection is a work in progress. Take the opener against the New York Jets. Metcalf was Rodgers’ No. 1 target, catching four for 83 yards on 7 attempts. That was a decent start.

Meanwhile, the Steelers allowed four sacks on Rodgers, which led to slants landing behind Metcalf as they tried to sync up. Fast forward to Week 2 against Seattle, Cowher thinks the timing improved. Rodgers’ passes found Metcalf in front more often. Metcalf finished with just three catches for 20 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown. Still, Cowher pointed out, Rodgers and Metcalf need time.

However, another big moment in that game was-Rodgers furious at Steelers WR Calvin Austin. So, let’s look, why Rodgers was angry.

Aaron Rodgers addressed the Calvin Austin incident

Aaron Rodgers’ home debut with the Steelers didn’t go as planned. Rodgers threw for 203 yards and a touchdown. But two interceptions haunted him. One especially stood out. With just over four minutes left in the third quarter, the game was tied 14-14.

Pittsburgh seemed set to take the lead. Instead, Rodgers’ pass slipped off Calvin Austin’s hands and into the arms of a Seahawks defender. That costly mistake changed everything.

Right after the game, Rodgers didn’t hold back. He was clearly frustrated.

“Cal’s the best kid ever, but he probably should have just stayed in the flat there. He knows it,” Rodgers said. “He was kind of stealing it from Pat or catching it to put it away and score a touchdown. Cal’s the best kid, and it sucks because he’s such a great kid. But unfortunately, that whole sequence took points off the board.”

His tone mixed disappointment with honesty, making it clear the play wasn’t up to standard.

On the other hand, Austin didn’t shy away from taking responsibility:

“That’s most definitely on me. That interception wasn’t on 8 [Rodgers] or on Pat or anything. If I had just stayed on the front pylon, it probably would have been a touchdown. I was in scramble rules. I was in the wrong spot, just trying to make a play. But I gotta do what I’m coached and not, in the spur of the moment, do something to try to make a play.”

Still, Rodgers isn’t throwing Austin under the bus. They’re still figuring each other out. Week 1 went well with Rodgers throwing four touchdowns, including one to Austin. But now, facing adversity, the Steelers look to bounce back against the Patriots in Week 3.
