A few days ago, the Steelers shocked everyone by trading away their wide receiver George Pickens. Many analysts claimed that he wasn’t on good terms with head coach Mike Tomlin. Now, both sides have pacified the boiling waters by publicly announcing it was in the best interest of both sides. Now, the Gold and Black fans are keenly waiting for the contract of their outside linebacker, TJ Watt. He signed a 4-year $112 million contract in 2021 till 2025. But everyone hoped he would get an extension in this off-season, which looks like he might not.
On the May 12 episode of Pro Football Talk, the host Mike Florio started the conversation with a doubt in mind. He claimed that TJ Watt was not going to get any deal. But the former NFL QB Chris Simms had a different stance. He claimed that Mike Tomlin could talk to Aaron Rodgers and sign a deal. That’s a wild approach. A-Rod hasn’t even committed to the franchise yet, but he has already become a big deal.
While describing the scenario around TJ Watt’s contract extension, Simms said, “Do they wanna really do this and talk about this with Aaron Rodgers probably coming in and, ‘here we go, we are going to try to make a run for this thing.’ I wouldn’t be shocked if they got like a week into training camp and they were like, ‘Come on TJ. Let’s go, let’s get him to work. We know we are going to pay him anyways. Let’s get it done, it’s easy.” But Florio still believed that TJ Watt will not get a deal this offseason.

Last time, the Steelers signed a deal with TJ Watt, they made him the highest paid linebacker. This year, the economics have changed. Browns DE Myles Garrett sits on top of the money ladder with a 4-year $160 million deal. Will the Steelers pay him as per top bracket defensive player? They already knew that his contact will expire after 2025. So if Mike Tomlin wants to keep him, he can always free up the cap space.
The fans are worried. Last year, the Steelers were having a great season until week 15 when they lost to the Eagles. It started a series of losses as the wild card loss against the Ravens eliminated them from the playoffs. But the defensive captain has come to ease their nerves.
