Essentials Inside The Story

  • DK Metcalf drops key pass in the first quarter
  • Steelers’ turnovers and missed opportunities compounded the damage
  • Texans’ defense dominated, holding Pittsburgh from a first home playoff win since 2017

Though it was early in the first quarter, Steelers wide receiver

DK Metcalf perhaps dropped the game, crushing their Super Bowl hopes this season. Mike Tomlin’s men endured yet another postseason heartbreak against the Houston Texans on Monday. Metcalf swung the momentum in the Texans’ favor after dropping a throw from Aaron Rodgers. Following the game, Metcalf’s costly mistake has sparked widespread debate. The Nightcap podcast hosts, Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson, questioned the 28-year-old’s receiving skills because of the drop.

“He is not the natural catcher of football,” said

Shannon Sharpe as Johnson concurred. “You can tell when a receiver is not a natural catcher of football. I mean, he is a receiver, yes, but he is not a natural. There’s a certain art to catching the ball. Some make it look easy. You gotta have great hands.”

As a former wide receiver himself, Johnson went on to elaborate on the natural art of catching. Sharpe discussed how the body needs to be relaxed when catching the ball. On a second-and-10 play in the first quarter of the game, the

Steelers built an early 3-0 lead with a field goal. Metcalf was wide open downfield around the 35-yard mark when veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers fired a long throw to his far right, which the receiver couldn’t hold on to.

With just five drops till then in the 2025 season, Metcalf wasn’t expected to miss out on an opportunity such as that.

Texans cornerback Derek Stingel Jr. was trailing behind, still a few feet away. Under no real pressure, it could have been a touchdown had Metcalf grabbed the football and rushed towards the end zone.

What could have been a 10-0 lead for the Steelers saw the opportunity collapse. The Texans later capitalized on that error, setting up a touchdown drive to take a 7-3 lead. The Steelers never regained their lead, with Metcalf later addressing the missed opportunity in the game.

DK Metcalf’s remarks after the game

For Metcalf, a highly anticipated return was not supposed to go this way. After losing Rodgers’ trust in the first quarter, Metcalf didn’t have a single reception in the remaining three quarters. After the game, the disappointed wide receiver talked about his team’s performance against the Texans.

“I mean, this sucked that we had to go out like this,” said Metcalf. “But we’re gonna watch the film and see what we can do better for next year. But, yeah, it’s tough right now.”

Coming off a two-game suspension, the wide receiver played the full game. With only 2 receptions, he finished with 42 receiving yards, with 25 yards being his longest reception.

Metcalf’s drop stung, but Pittsburgh’s missed chances went beyond one play. Ultimately, turnovers and a suffocating Texans defense kept their first home playoff win since 2017 out of reach.
