“Right Now We’re in The Playoffs”: Ben Roethlisberger’s Supportive Voice Did Not Help Steelers OC Matt Canada To Save His Job

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been unpredictable all season long. After the heartbreaking loss against the Cleveland Browns 13-10, a team they had defeated earlier in the season, something drastic needed to be done, especially in the offensive department. But former QB Ben Roethlisberger is against the recent firing and came to the OC Matt Canada’s defense.
The Steelers 6-4 are still alive and well in the playoff race. While the fans have not been supportive of Canada, a serial winner like Roethlisberger’s support should’ve been enough. Though his words of displeasure came too late to save the OC, Roethlisberger’s backing is monumental.

The Steelers had employed the 51-year-old since 2020. However, the offensive output of the squad looked unsure at times. And it was more evident this season than any other. The loss against the Browns in week 11 was too much to bear for anyone rooting for the Steelers. But the 41-year-old Roethlisberger does not like this blame game.

“It’s Fire Matt Canada, this and that, and the other. I don’t know that that’s the answer”, said the two-time Super Bowl winner with the Steelers. He defended the OC by saying, “I mean, right now we’re in the playoffs. We’re 6-4”. Technically, the former QB is correct, the Steelers are in the 7th spot to make it to the playoffs.

For the lack of offensiveness in the Steelers game, Roethlisberger said, “I think they need to probably look at themselves in the mirror as an offense and figure out what they need to do and what they can do, how they can get better”. But what’s done is done. And the Steelers need to look ahead rather than ruminate on the decision.

The AFC North is one of the toughest groups in the NFL, including both conferences. And the Steelers’ next game is once again against a divisional rival. A rival who, just like the Browns, is hunting for the playoff spot, the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals are 5-5 at the moment and are 11th in the AFC right now to make it to the playoffs. The home game against the Steelers will be their biggest hurdle. On the other hand, the Steelers need to win to maintain their playoff spot and justify the firing of Canada.
