The Pittsburgh Steelers might be sitting at the top of the AFC North, but the offense hasn’t looked great. They’re still one of the bottom five teams in the league when it comes to total yards per game (288.1). Aaron Rodgers has definitely stepped up and tried to get this offense rolling, but lately, those offensive flaws have been showing more and more. Looks like the front office finally noticed it too, because the Steelers just made an immediate signing to give the veteran QB some help and hopefully fix things before it gets worse.

As per ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Steelers have officially signed wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to their practice squad. This move adds depth to their receiving corps and provides the team with a veteran presence who can contribute if promoted to the active roster. Before being released last month from San Francisco 49ers, the WR recorded 4 receptions for 40 yards. Though his 2025 season might not appear to be impressive to many, he has a notable career with passing.

Over the course of his eight-year career, Valdes-Scantling has participated in 111 games with several teams, including the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, and the 49ers. His career stats are notable, comprising 209 receptions for 3,606 yards and 20 touchdowns. Additionally, he has logged 10 carries for 52 yards.
All his stats are proof that the 31-year-old wide receiver will likely turn out as a major boost to the already struggling Pittsburgh arsenal. While Rodgers won a much-needed game in week 9 against the Indianapolis Colts, he still has something to say about the offense.

Aaron Rodgers sends brutal and honest message
“Oh, I loved the play-calling,” Rodgers said to the Pittsburgh media after the 27-20 win over the Colts on Sunday. “I thought the execution was pretty bad. We gotta look in the mirror and play better on offense because that is not good enough.” Rodgers gave a brutal but honest opinion, not blaming the offensive playcalling, instead holding the team accountable.

Indianapolis is arguably the best team in the NFL at the present standings. After 9 weeks, the Colts are at the top spot in the AFC South with a 7-2 record. This led to the Steelers’ offense racking up 225 yards. Still, Aaron Rodgers pulled a stellar performance with a 71.4% completion for 203 yards with 1 touchdown. Despite this, he continued to explain what made him not happy with the execution on offense.
“Me, the run game, catching the football,” Rodgers said. “Defense played incredible, but in a game like that, we got to put 35 or 42 on the board and close the game out. That’s good tape for the coaching staff when you win the game and you got a lot to work on.”

The signing of Marquez Valdes-Scantling follows concerns about the Steelers’ wide receiver depth. It is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen their offense as they aim to support quarterback Aaron Rodgers and improve offensive consistency in 2025. Valdes-Scantling’s experience with multiple NFL teams should prove valuable in practice and potentially in future game situations.
