The last time Steel City hosted the NFL Draft? It was way back in 1947 (1948 Draft). Interestingly, the first draft pick was then actually a bonus pick determined by lottery! It has been seven-and-a-half decades since but there are strong indications that Pittsburgh may host the same event sometime soon. Now, it is impossible to ignore that such a development is stirring up at a time when Russell Wilson decided to join the Steelers. A stroke of luck for both? Could be as the word of the possibility of such a thing happening has now come down from Commissioner Roger Goodell.

As Pittsburgh awaits the NFL’s decision, Roger Goodell’s subtle hints have fueled hope once again. “They’re in the mix. I’ll tell you that,” said Goodell. “So that may be coming soon.”  This comes just over 2 months since the official Pittsburgh Steelers X account confirmed that they submitted their NFL Draft bid. But the question remains when.

Now, with the ongoing Draft being held in Detroit and the next Draft host in Green Bay confirmed, the 2026 edition is when Pittsburgh might finally get its chance. But is Steel City armored to host the NFL’s biggest off-season event? Pittsburgh’s bid, led by a collaborative effort, showcases various venues across the city, including downtown’s Cultural District and Point State Park.

“We proposed several sites where that would make the most sense,” said Jerad Bachar, president of VisitPittsburgh. “Where it would probably make the most sense is on the North Shore, next to Acrisure Stadium.”

However, hosting the NFL draft requires more than just ample space. Pittsburgh made promises regarding the new terminal under construction at Pittsburgh International Airport, scheduled to open in time for the 2026 draft. Additionally, hotel space presents a challenge, requiring cooperation from surrounding counties to meet the NFL’s requirements. “We would need hotels throughout the entire region,” said Bachar.

Despite these challenges, Pittsburgh remains optimistic about its chances.”We’re thrilled to see all the enthusiasm from the Steelers, governor, and other local partners,” said Burt Lauten, Steelers spokesman. “Pittsburgh has hosted a number of big events and is clearly a key NFL market.” After nearly eight decades, Pittsburgh will be bringing the draft back to where it all began at the Fort Pitt Hotel.

Russell Wilson brings a lot to the table

Back when he joined the Broncos as the new starting quarterback in 2022, the No. 1 bestselling jersey was Wilson’s No. 3. He carried the same jersey number throughout his pro career, starting his tenure with the Seahawks, and will continue to do so with the Steelers as well.

At Pittsburgh, his affordable contract allows the team to make strategic signings. “The best part about it is we get to add more players and do more things, and really, go win,” said Wilson. His influence already has led to several signings, including linebacker Patrick Queen and safety DeShon Elliott.

And with the latest optimistic reactions from the NFL Commissioner, Pittsburgh hopes to celebrate a massive win–not only securing the bid to host the NFL draft but also showcasing its charm and talented football field to the world.
