Over the past three years, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ performance has been deteriorating. Currently standing at 6-6, things seemed to have gone from bad to worse this past weekend. The 26-7 loss against the Buffalo Bills is enough proof that the team is struggling. So, what is the issue with the Aaron Rodgers-led team? Well, cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.’s father seems to have all the answers.

He made it clear that Aaron Rodgers isn’t the one responsible for his team’s disappointing performance. Samuel Jr.’s father, Asante Samuel, named wide receiver DK Metcalf as the problem.

“He (DK Metcalf) is most of the problem,” former player Asante Samuel said. At the end of the day, Aaron Rodgers needs someone to throw to. He’s used to having elite receivers that can suddenly get open. DK Metcalf just can’t provide that for Aaron Rodgers,” he said.

“And DK Metcalf is the reason Aaron Rodgers is looking so old because he keeps trying to throw DK Metcalf the football, and he is not even getting the ounce of separation, especially when he’s going against press coverage. And as much as Aaron Rodgers still wants to win, man, he just doesn’t have the talent at receiver to make things happen.”

He argued that Metcalf isn’t trying to use his strong physique and be aggressive on the field. Metcalf, for his part, started the season strong with four catches for 83 yards. However, in the recent few games, he’s struggled to rack up 50 yards. The WR was targeted five times against the Bills. But it’s not just Metcalf.

There have been issues across the entire WR group, including Calvin Austin III.

Rodgers and his receivers have struggled with deep and midrange connections. The same happened in the Bills game. On a third-and-4, he overthrew Roman Wilson on a sideline route, leading to an incompletion.

“I threw a ball I thought was going to get hit by the wind, and it was 4 yards over Roman, so that’s a s—-y throw,” Rodgers said. “I got to make that throw.”

He also took a strip-sack to open the third quarter while waiting for someone to get open. The offense finished with just 166 total yards. And even Rodgers didn’t hesitate to call out his receivers during the presser.

“When there’s film sessions, everybody shows up, and when I check to a route, you do the right route,” Rodgers said. “… We have our meetings every week. We have other opportunities outside of the facility, and [I] look forward to seeing all the boys there.”

He even sent a strong message to the locker room.

So, Samuel is right about the problems in the WR room. But despite acknowledging those issues, he suggested the QB consider a career change.

Aaron Rodgers urged to retire

Completing just 10 of 21 passes for 117 yards, the 41-year-old QB had one of his most uninspiring outings of the season. The 10 completions are his lowest total in any game where he’s thrown at least 20 passes. And those numbers are far from what fans expect from a Hall of Fame-worthy quarterback.

And even if Samuel understands the reason behind Rodgers’ underwhelming performance, he wants him to retire and consider a change in his career.

“I think it’s about time for Aaron Rodgers’ old self to go on ahead and hop in someone’s booth and start his broadcasting career,” he said.

Now, the chatter about whether Rodgers can still play at an elite level at his age has been constant. The noise only grew louder after yet another outing that lacked both power and accuracy.

It might be that he’s coming off an injury, but the Pittsburgh Steelers can’t wait. With the playoffs closing in, they must fix their issue on offense.
