This season, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ plan for their wideouts has been a constant talking point. Outside of DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin III, there’s not much to lean on. Depth has been thin, and production has been up and down. Now, after weeks of speculation, Mike Tomlin has finally spoken about the wide receiver situation.

“We got a deep and talented group in that space, and they’re all eligibles,” Tomlin said. “They’re positionless receivers, REC, and that’s kind of the spirit in which we’ve operated all season.” So, in other words, Tomlin will use TEs. And he got options with Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, Jonnu Smith and Connor Heyward.

And as a result, insider Mark Kaboly feels Mike Tomlin will not make any big moves.

“I think they want to, maybe, protect their b-tt, just in case Austin’s injury pops up again and maybe if a DK Metcalf gets hurt. But…I don’t see any real willingness to go out there and give up a third-round pick to get Chris Olave or whoever else might come up with Jakobi Meyers. I think he’s still banked up… I don’t see that happening.”

Interestingly, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler is one of those who named New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave as an option for Tomlin. He even predicted a 20% chance that the Saints could move Olave mid-season, with the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Giants listed among his top three potential destinations.

Right now, Olave is under his four-year, $19.3 million rookie deal. The Saints have already picked up his club option for 2026, which means the 25-year-old will play next year at a salary of $15.5 million before entering free agency.

Then there’s Jakobi Meyers. He has proven himself as a solid No. 2 option with 29 catches for 329 yards in six games this season. The 28-year-old has one year remaining on his three-year, $33 million deal and is set to become a free agent in 2026 if he doesn’t receive an extension. But the story doesn’t end there.

Mike Tomlin got Meyers’ update

It was again ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler who shared an update on Jakobi Meyers and his potential fit in Pittsburgh. According to the analyst, the wideout’s skill set aligns perfectly with what the Steelers need. However, there’s one problem: the Las Vegas Raiders are giving “mixed signals.”

“The combination of DK Metcalf, a great trio at tight end (Pat Freiermuth, Jonnu Smith, Darnell Washington) and a steady running game is working right now,” Fowler wrote.

“Las Vegas’ Jakobi Meyers is an ideal fit because he’s adaptable. He can be a reliable No. 2 or a high-volume target if needed. But the Raiders are one of the teams giving mixed signals on whether they would actually execute a deal, which complicates the market. They aren’t the only ones,” he added.

What’s more interesting is that Meyers has been seeking a trade for months. He reportedly requested one earlier this offseason after failing to secure an extension. Since then, not much has changed.

“Oh, for sure,” Meyers said about his potential trade. “But I’m a professional at the end of the day. I’m just trying to play good football. If I’m here, I’ll play good football. If I’m not here, I’ll go out there and play wherever I’m supposed to be.”

So, will he join the Steelers mid-season? Only time will tell.
