There’s always some talk about tweaking the NFL rules, right? A few months ago, Roger Goodell brought up the idea that the “tush push” should be banned. The reasoning? Probably the heightened injury risk for players involved in that kind of play. Though, honestly, “injuries aren’t happening as much despite big bodies ramming into each other every week when the play is used.” The league just wrapped up another draft season filled with its usual share of controversies and endless takes from analysts. And now, there’s chatter about revamping the draft process as the NBA does. One person who had plenty to say about all this? Cam Heyward.

This past Saturday, Cam Heyward took to his Not Just Football with Cam Heyward Instagram account to speak about the Steelers and a few NFL-related ideas. It all started when Hayden Walsh mentioned, “Mike Greenberg was on Get Up and said the NFL should go to a lottery like the NBA.” Cam wasn’t having it at all, bluntly clapping back with, “No, dumbest thing you could have said. That is the most rigged thing. NBA is the most rigged lottery thing ever.” Honestly, he didn’t hold back.

Now, for those wondering what this whole NBA lottery deal is about—basically, the NBA Draft Lottery ensures that the team with the worst record won’t pick lower than fifth. Before 2019, the worst-record team could do no worse than fourth. The format also changed in 2019 to even out the odds at the top. Now, the three worst regular-season records all have a 14% chance of getting the No. 1 pick. Back in the day (pre-2019), it was heavily weighted—the worst team had a 25% chance, the second-worst had 19.9%, and the third-worst had 15.6%. After the first four picks are drawn, the rest of the teams pick in order based on their regular-season records.

Jumping back into the convo—Hayden tried to defend his point, saying, “I think it would be fun and it would eliminate tanking. Y’all don’t really tank, so it doesn’t really matter.” But Cam doubled down and disagreed again, saying there are definitely some teams out there tanking. Then he threw a little shade: “Do you want to say who? The team they call a dumpster fire.” And right on cue, during the video, a Steelers logo horribly popped up in a sarcastic way. There’s been a lot of chatter lately about whether the NFL should adopt the NBA’s draft lottery system.

The 2025 NBA Draft lottery stirred up a ton of drama in the sports world, especially after the Dallas Mavericks snagged the No. 1 pick with only a 1.8% chance of landing it. Of course, this had NFL executives raising their eyebrows. Could the NFL follow suit? Giants general manager Joe Schoen doesn’t think so.

Schoen shared his thoughts during an appearance on “Up & Adams with Kay Adams,” making it crystal clear he’s not a fan of the NFL jumping to a lottery format. While some argue it could reduce tanking, Schoen believes it would just bring chaos to what is arguably the league’s most critical process. “I would not be in favor of that,” Schoen said. “Typically, if you’re picking up there, what’s the most important position for a franchise? If you’re in that position, you’ve probably earned the right to hopefully get one of those players who can turn the franchise’s luck around for potentially 15 to 20 years.”

Basically, the NFL and NBA approach parity in completely different ways, and for good reason. The NFL’s current system is simple: teams with the worst records get the top picks to help them climb out of the trenches with fresh talent. Meanwhile, in NBA land, they have been trying to curb tanking throughout their grueling 82-game season, which is why they decided the draft order for non-playoff teams using a lottery system. Now, this lottery system leads to some wild surprises—just ask NBA fans.

What’s your perspective on:

Is the NFL ready for the chaos of an NBA-style draft lottery, or is it a disaster waiting?

Have an interesting take?

Take this year’s jaw-dropper, for example. The Dallas Mavericks, who missed the playoffs after shipping Luka Doncic off to the Lakers (yes, they actually did that), somehow scored the No. 1 pick despite only having the 11th-best odds of winning. That’s a plot twist if we’ve ever seen one! It was a huge win for Dallas because now they’ll get to draft none other than Cooper Flagg, Duke’s All-American superplayer who dominated last season and nearly swept the National Player of the Year awards while leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four.

Moments like this lottery upset make you stop and wonder: what would happen if the NFL tried something similar? Seriously, imagine how chaotic — or exciting — the league would become if they adopted a draft system like this. But The Steelers appear to be experiencing their own version of an NBA draft lottery mess, especially regarding the quarterback situation. That has become one of the biggest talking points.

What did Cam Heyward say about the Steelers QB situation?

“I woke up the next morning, and he had been traded. I was surprised. But yeah, but the game is the game.” Those were Cam Heyward’s words when news of George Pickens’ trade broke, stirring quite a frenzy among Steelers fans. It’s a whirlwind in the world of Pittsburgh football, leaving the Black and Gold faithful grappling with mixed emotions. Despite Heyward’s call for calm, tensions are high as fans digest this major shake-up. The spotlight is now on Pittsburgh’s offseason maneuvers, which have been nothing short of eventful. While landing star receiver DK Metcalf should be cause for celebration, uncertainty clouds the team due to ongoing roster questions and an unsettled quarterback scenario.

It looks like the team is trying to stay calm and take their time figuring things out. Meanwhile, some fans already hit the panic button about the team’s future. Just a couple of days ago, Steelers defensive star Cam Heyward stepped in to cool those worries. “This is a PSA for all Steeler fans: Don’t panic, stay patient, we’ll get to work,” Heyward reassured everyone. “I think sometimes we can jump off the ship and think the ship is sinking. We have work to do. And, you know, whoever wins the offseason isn’t going to win the regular season or the Super Bowl.” Honestly, it’s giving major Aaron Rodgers vibes—remember when he told Packers fans to “relax” years ago? Interestingly, Rodgers is still being considered as a possible quarterback option for Pittsburgh, which would make all of this pretty wild if it comes full circle.

Pittsburgh remains laser-focused on making the postseason this year and possibly breaking through for more than just one win. At this point, it’s basically Super Bowl or bust for the team, and Heyward might be hinting that big things are on the horizon. Steelers fans, buckle up—it’s shaping up to be a season full of surprises.
