The Super Bowl was created as a merger between the AFL and the NFL. This championship game was not even referred to as Super Bowl for its first two editions. However, one thing was common: the tickets back then were also considered to be overpriced. But how much were they? And what is the cost today?

The Super Bowl ticketing history
The Green Bay Packers from the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs from the AFL were the first-ever contestants for the Super Bowl. This inaugural game was not a hit with the public. The concept was a bit unclear to the populace and ticket prices were too high.

Hence the chosen stadium, Los Angeles Coliseum, did not even get filled up. Seats were left unsold as the ticket prices of $15, $12, and $10 weren’t attractive for this new venture.

This steep increase over the 5 decades shows how much this matchup has overtaken the American imagination. But what was this game referred to if not Super Bowl?

Turning back time
The game of football wasn’t as popular as it is today. And with two separate leagues within the country competing for viewership, it made no sense to be in each other’s way. Hence, both leagues before merging in 1970, started to play their best teams against each other for the ultimate game of the season.

Before being known as the Super Bowl, this game was known as the ‘AFL-NFL World Championship Game’. But the media and the public kept referring to it as the Super Bowl. Hence, in its third edition, it was named the Super Bowl III.
