Matthew Stafford has had a stellar career. 12 seasons with the Lions, and another four years with the Rams. This guy cashed in a Super Bowl win the very year he joined the Rams. Imagine being so good that you help the HC, trying to convince new players to join your team. That’s how amazing this guy is. But since the 2021 season, Rams’ story has been a lot like “almost, but-”, and as Stafford enters his fifth year with the Rams, there are some off-the-field signs that point to a rocky road ahead.
Matthew Stafford has been juggling properties ever since he set foot in Los Angeles. At one point, he owned as many as 5 properties, all around the iconic Hidden Hills area. He sold the first property he bought in 2021 – a $19.6 million mansion – just a year later. He then went on to buy two side-by-side properties from Drake for $11 million, also in the Hidden Hills. The Staffords clearly have a taste for luxurious mansions, and anyone would tell you investing in real estate is the most profitable thing in all the ways you could make money. But now, before the 2025 season, Stafford has made a call on two of his properties that have us flipping back pages of Stafford’s history.
As per recent reports, Stafford is looking to sell the houses he bought from Drake after his Super Bowl win. The Staffords have listed the houses up for grabs for a little north of $13 million. If anyone wants a piece of land owned by NFL royalty as well as a rap royalty, this is the chance of a lifetime. Back in 2024, the Staffords had listed these two properties for sale once, and now they are doubling down on it again. Stafford isn’t stepping away from Hidden Hills right away, though. He has two more places to call home in the area. While their reasons for listing the sale are unclear, it is notable that the Staffords had made a similar move before moving away from the Lions.

Matthew Stafford had bought a stunning lake house in Bloomfield, Michigan, way back in 2013. Four years later, he also got another property in Atlanta, GA. But fast forward to 2021, when it was time to join the Rams, Stafford sold both of these and moved on to LA. The fans are wondering if something similar is in the works again for Stafford. Now, Stafford has always been making profits out of his properties. So all of this could just be a monopoly move to free up cash and buy a bigger mansion. But reading between the lines, he’s only got a limited time with the Rams now. And Stafford clearly wants to continue playing. Could that be the reason he’s stepping up and doing away with the houses?

Matthew Stafford’s future with the Rams
Now, the 2024 season had its moments for the Rams. Matthew Stafford led the team to an NFC West title, almost catching the Eagles by the wings in the playoffs at one point. But they ended up with a 10-7 season, leaving a lot more to be desired. Age is playing catch with Stafford (he’s 37 now), and if the signs are any indication, he just may be ready to move on from the Rams, not yet, but soon. Just back in February, Stafford agreed to a restructured contract with the Rams that gave him a lot more money than he would have made this year. But it wasn’t that simple either.

Contract negotiations didn’t really go well for Matthew Stafford at the start of this offseason. He was already talking to other teams about possible trades. The 37-year-old veteran play caller was only going to make about $23 million this year. An amount much lesser than what a quarterback of his caliber deserves. There weren’t many guarantees left in the deal either. But the Rams came through. And thanks to a restructured deal, Stafford now stands to make about $44 million this season, a much needed raise for sure. And if he stays on the Rams roster for 2026, he will stand to make another $40 million, totalling a sweet $84 million deal.
If Stafford had hit free agency this year, there were a lot of options for him to choose from. There’s no shortage of teams that need a veteran QB on their roster. But next year is the one for QBs. With as many as 5 QBs projected to go in the first-round itself. If the Rams get a new QB next year, Matthew Stafford might stick around to show him the ropes as a mentor for a new development. But what about the season after that? With him selling his properties now, he might just be gearing up for such an eventuality. What do you think?
