According to the rules of the NFL, each franchise can use the tag on one player per season. This binds that player to play for the franchise, even if their contract is up. However, under the rules, the franchise must pay the player the average of the top 5 salaries in that player’s position.
A lot of you asking about this yesterday/today. The franchise tag for a QB is $38.3 million, not only a high price but an inflexible one that can’t be adjusted, so it would take up a massive chunk of Bucs’ cap space and make it difficult to re-sign other players.
