Two weeks into the season, Joey Slye looked like the Titans‘ most reliable weapon. But now the kicker seems to search for his spark. He has missed four straight attempts, including a pair of first-half misfires from 41 and 43 yards in Houston. Those misses loomed large as Tennessee could have advanced to the halftime tied 6-6 before ultimately falling to Houston in an embarrassing 26-0 loss on September 28. Naturally, questions started swirling over the Titans’ kicker. But head coach Brian Callahan wasn’t flinching.

He brushed off all the speculations as “normal flow of operations.” Callahan even doubled his beliefs in Syle and said, “He has been fantastic for us, I believe whole-heartedly in Joey. I’ll send him right out there again to kick it again.” Despite Slye’s recent slump, Callahan’s message seems clear: the Titans’ trust in their kicker remains intact, and he will be seen kicking the ball in week 5 as well.

The front desk also analysed a group of kickers on Tuesday that created a buzz in the Titans camp. But Callahan later explained that these visits don’t reflect on Slye’s future with the team. “Just like I always say for us, we’re always evaluating everything. That’s just a part of the normal procedure. We have workouts every Tuesday. We always have guys in at all positions, even at positions we don’t think we need. You’re always taking a look, should you need something. It’s more just doing your homework and knowing what’s available,” he said.

Back in the preseason, Slye gave the Titans fans a glimpse of his big leg by drilling a 63-yard field goal in a 23-13 win over the Minnesota Vikings. This was also the longest kick ever made at the Nissan Stadium. He just wasn’t done there. Syle added a 53-yard shot in the same game. It is because of these performances that he has gained the faith of Callahan and the Titans’ front office. Despite veteran kickers on the roster, the Titans will continue to give Syle opportunities at the gridiron.

Titans are trying new kickers before week 5
The Tennessee Titans are back in action while preparing for their week 5 showdown against the Arizona Cardinals. Desperate for a season opener, Tuesday for the Titans was about flipping all the pages of their playbook. The front office brought in a massive group of 12 players for workouts, leaving no stone unturned. This concerned the special teams as well.

While Joey Slye was battling the accuracy issues, the Titans brought in four veteran kickers as well. Among the names? Zane Gonzalez, Dustin Hopkins, Greg Joseph, and Matthew Wright, each with NFL experience, and hunting for opportunity if things get shaky with the Titans’ current kicking regime. Not to forget, long snapper Zach Triner, and punter Colton Spengler also rounded out the group of specialists. This makes 6 out of 12 workouts tied directly to the kicking.

Matthew Wright had a short stint with the Titans in 2024, and Greg Joseph appeared for the Titans in 2019. It is Dustin Hopkins who has the biggest resume among all, despite everyone having recent NFL experience in 2024. Hopkins is also the eldest among the lot. At 35, he brings nearly a decade of experience.
The Titans are trying to strengthen each of their bases, including their running, passing, and kicking. The other names who appeared on Tuesday for the workout were wide receivers Elijah Cooks, Lance McCutcheon, and Brenden Rice, quarterbacks Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Ben Woolridge, and tight end Marshall Lang. But this raises the questions, either they are adding the firepower or steadying the special teams, the message seems clear that the roster spots are still open, and the Titans are exploring other options as well.
