After just 2 games as a professional player, Tennessee Titans’ QB Cam Ward has already paved the way to be compared to one of the greatest QBs in the league, Kansas City Chiefs‘ starter Patrick Mahomes.

While the Titans have struggled, falling to 0-2 already, one cannot hold Ward to that record.

After their 33-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, veteran quarterback and Super Bowl champ of the 2021 season, Matthew Stafford, couldn’t help but acknowledge Ward’s skill. On Sirius XM Sports’ ‘Let’s Go!’ Stafford praised the rookie’s debut touchdown pass and noted that Ward is in a league of his own.

“That’s a salty team. I know their record is what it is, but it’s a really solid defense. A young quarterback that is super talented. Man, his first touchdown pass of his career was one to remember. That was an unbelievable play. I just tipped my cap to him on the sideline and said, ‘That’s well done, youngun.’”

Stafford was taken by how Cam Ward made plays out of the pocket and threw with timing and rhythm, noting Ward’s knack for buying time and throwing dimes to unexpected targets.

“I was impressed by what he was able to do out of the pocket. He made some plays with his feet and threw a couple balls in timing and rhythm down the field to some receivers that were really impressive. And then the touchdown pass was a play of its own… It almost looked a little Patrick Mahomes-ish, where you’re running around back there buying all sorts of time and then throwing it to the part of the field where nobody thought you’d throw it. And it was an impressive play by the kid.”

Ward’s debut touchdown was a remarkable display of improvisation. Falling back almost 20 yards, he rolled right and threw a cross-body fade to rookie receiver Elic Ayomanor.

It defied traditional quarterback norms, sure, but it revealed his arm strength and vision.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Cam Ward the next Patrick Mahomes, or is it too early to make such comparisons?

Stafford’s praise gives weight to a growing discussion since Ward came out of the Draft at the No. 1 overall pick.

ESPN analyst Loius Riddick had pointed out Ward’s unconventional throwing style: feet often parallel with sidearm, three-quarter releases. This is reminiscent of Mahomes’ baseball-like motion.

As Riddick had noted, “Cam Ward does the same thing. He can do the same types of things. He has very similar arm horsepower to Patrick.”

Ward’s journey to this point is anything but typical. Beginning at Incarnate Word, transferring to Washington State, then Miami, Ward amassed 4,313 passing yards and 39 TDs in 2024 across 13 games. His game combines deep throws, mobility, and an ability to improvise under pressure. These are the very traits that have fueled the Mahomes comparisons.

Still early in his career, Cam Ward is a rookie learning under fire

Against the Rams, he threw for 175 yards and a touchdown. Although he got sacked five times, that reflected Tennessee’s O-Line issues rather than flaws in Ward’s play.

His agility to evade pressure and extend plays is Mahomes-like, pointing to high upside despite the team’s shaky start. Ward’s work ethic also stands out; arriving at practice fields early, dissecting film, and leading teammates in preparation, his drive for improvement is clear.

The comparison to Mahomes is more than hype; it signals Tennessee’s hope that Ward can transform their franchise. But Ward still must develop consistency before reaching that elite level. It’s a challenge made harder given the Titans’ rebuilding phase.

As Cam Ward gains experience, his accuracy and improvisation creates new dimensions for Tennessee’s attack. We’ve already seen that in action in Week 2. The climb ahead is steep, but Ward’s promise is unmistakable. A rookie with arm talent, poise, and pocket presence that recalls Mahomes’ early flashes. For Tennessee, the real season starts now; one where Ward might soon rewrite expectations and lead the franchise into a new era.
