The Tennessee Titans‘ quarterback Cam Ward is having a terrible rookie season, to say the least. Through six games, he has led the team to a total of just 83 points, their lowest since 1985 and the third-worst in the league. Naturally, head coach Brian Callahan wasn’t exactly in a mood to cut him any slack following their 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

“I’m incredibly discouraged by the outcome, we felt good coming into the game,” Callahan said after the game. “And to not be able to perform well on offense, and not be able to score on points, and then lose a game is just funny. We all gotta be better. Cam’s a part of that too. Cam’s gotta play better football as well. And we gotta coach better, we gotta play better, all those things. It’s not all just him, but he is a part of it.”

Ward, pressured constantly, was sacked 6 times for 62 yards. He completed 26 of 38 passes for 222 yards for a touchdown and an interception, with more than half of those yards coming in the fourth quarter with the Raiders leading. Not to mention, he also lost two fumbles.

The result? It was the second game this season that the Titans were blanked out in the first half, as they averaged a measly 2.7 yards per offensive snap.

By contrast, Geno Smith, who has easily been one of the worst QBs this season, looked steadier. He completed 17 of 23 passes for 174 yards, also with one touchdown and one interception, and had a 91.6 passer rating (compared to Ward’s 81.2). He was sacked only twice for 16 yards, showing better movement in the pocket and faster decisions.

“I think I see it just the same every play, in practice, out of practice,” Ward said in the post-game conference on being asked how far along he is when it comes to the game slowing down for him. “It’s slowed down for me, it’s just now me connecting with the receivers, staying above the chains and doing our job.”

Overall, there were very few moments in the game that the Titans could call their own. In fact, one of them was snatched from them in an unfortunate reversal of fortunes.

Brian Callahan makes feelings clear about the referees’ decision

With the Raiders leading 3-0 in the second quarter, edge rusher Jihad Ward sacked Geno Smith. As the ball dropped from his arm a few yards away, LB Cody Barton picked up the ball and took off, finishing his 43-yard run in the end zone.

The referees, however, reviewed it and called it an incomplete pass, leaving the HC justifiably disappointed.

“I thought we scored on defense, and we needed them to step up for us today.” he said. “They ruled that his arm was coming forward. I thought it was pretty darn close.”

“It would have been big,” said Barton of the reversed TD. “That would have been big momentum-wise, and score-wise.”

The Titans went from 0-3 to 0-10 and then 0-17 before they could register a field goal as late as the third quarter.

Up next for Brian Callahan and Co. are the (4-2) New England Patriots, whose QB Drake Maye has impressed even the legends of the game.
