Just like that, the Raiders have moved on from an inexperienced coaching target to an experienced head coach. After making a lot of noise with then-Lions OC Ben Johnson’s arrival in Sin City, Tom Brady’s Raiders have quickly moved on after Johnson took the Chicago Bears job. They have turned their attention toward a Super Bowl-winning head coach to compete with the likes of Andy Reid, Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh.
On Friday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Raiders have agreed a 3-year deal with former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. This marks the return of Carroll, who had just left Seattle last year. His arrival in Vegas means Carroll is now the oldest head coach in the NFL at 73. He leapfrogs Andy Reid, 66, who previously held the crown. See, Brady’s decision to go with Carroll means he is looking for some instant solutions.

Judging by Carroll’s age, he won’t be a long-term solution for the Raiders. However, in a division like the AFC West, where the Raiders are behind the pack. Choosing to go with an inexperienced candidate like Johnson could have been a disaster. Yeah, he could have been a great option and was probably up for the challenge. But throwing a first-year head coach against the likes of the Chiefs, Broncos, and Chargers wouldn’t have been a wise choice. This AFC West just saw three of their teams make the playoffs. And as for the Raiders, they were nowhere near their divisional rivals with a record of 4-13.
Carroll is coming to Vegas with a strong reputation for a rebuild. He took over a Seahawks franchise in 2009 when they were just coming off a 5-11 record. From there, Carroll took them to the playoffs with a head-scratching 7-9 record in his first season. Also went on to deliver Super Bowl XLVIII in his 4th season. And you know what? He could have won it again the following year if not for Carroll’s former team, the New England Patriots, led by none other than Tom Brady.
With Carroll’s arrival in Sin City and a QB problem to solve. Is there any chance that the Raiders will try to get Russell Wilson in Vegas? You know what? It’s possible, considering Wilson had just praised his former coach before he took the Raiders job.

Russell Wilson set for a possible reunion with Pete Carroll in Las Vegas
A few days back, when the Raiders still weren’t in the conversation of Pete Carroll to Vegas. Russell Wilson had just appeared on Pat McAfee Show to voice his admiration for Carroll, “Coach Carroll did a tremendous job of leading us and pushing us every day to be our best back then. And I think us players wanted that level of work and attention. That kind of defined the odds in a way. Listen, I think Pete’s an amazing football coach. I think he’s an amazing individual.” Carroll’s time in Seattle saw him lead the Seahawks to 10 playoff appearances and the only Super Bowl in their franchise. However, after consecutive 9-8 finishes, Carroll decided to leave Seattle, thereby ending his 14-year stint.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Pete Carroll the missing piece the Raiders need to finally break their playoff drought?
Have an interesting take?
And now that he has returned as a head coach with Wilson’s future up in the air in Pittsburgh. Jeff Howe of The Athletic feels the Raiders could soon make a move for Wilson, “With Pete Carroll taking over the Raiders, one name I’ve heard to watch at QB: Russell Wilson. They have mended fences, and Wilson could be a stopgap while the Raiders develop a long-term answer.” See, here’s the thing: The Raiders do have a No.6 overall pick in this year’s draft. And they could pick a QB, but pushing him to a starting berth won’t be great for his development.

So, it seems more logical for them to get Wilson in Vegas, probably for a year or two, while they look to develop a young QB. Right now, everything is just an assumption. But for the Raiders, it could be a great opportunity to emerge from the shadows of the Chiefs, Broncos and Chargers.
