While the 57-yard field goal might have been a record-setting number for the Super Bowl, goals from beyond 50 yards, and 60-yard are a common affair in the league.
The most recent record for the field goal was set in 2023 by the Arizona Cardinals’ Matt Prater. The placekicker recorded 62 yards, making it the season’s longest kick. It was also recorded by the Chiefs’ Harrison Butker against the Buffalo Bills. In 2019, Bratt Maher set the franchise record with a 63-yard shot. Justin Tucker set the NFL record back in 2021 when he the longest game-winning field goal for 66 yards. In the process, he beat out Matt Prater’s 64-yard shot in 2013. The earliest of 63 yards was recorded in 1970 when Tom Dempsey smashed the league’s 56-yard record.
In between 66 and 62, a total of thirteen players have scored 62 or 63-yard field goals. However, the longest field goal in football was recorded outside of the NFL. It happened in 1976 in a game between Abilene Christian and East Texas State collegiate match. Ove Johansson of ACU put up a 69-yard goal that still stands undefeated.
Coming back to the game, Jake Moody’s record-breaking field goal might as well provide a draught end for the 49ers as halftime stats present numbers in their favor.
