Just hours before the game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Travis Kelce was downgraded after Patrick Mahomes was already rested. The Kansas City Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, decided to sit out the tight end, even though he is on the verge of achieving a remarkable record.

Many consider the 34-year-old to be the most excellent TE of this generation. But this record would have his name in the stratosphere. All future TEs of the game will look up to Kelce, even though he cannot reach this milestone. But he is not the only one to miss the last game.

Nevertheless, Travis Kelce is a great TE

In 17 weeks of action-packed football, Kelce racked up 984 receiving yards, just 16 yards short of 1,000 yards for this season. Kelce has reached the 1,000+ yards mark for the last seven consecutive seasons, and this record alone justifies his stature in the game.

The two-time Super Bowl winner is the only TE in the history of the league to have seven back-to-back seasons of 1,000+ yards. Others have managed to get only two. No other TE has even achieved the rare accomplishment thrice.

However, Kelce’s streak gets broken this season. With him not participating, the seven-season record will stand for a long time in the NFL. But why did HC Reid rest one of the best TEs for the last game of the regular season?

Stars are not needed for the rivals

The Week 18 matchup between the divisional rivals, the Chiefs and the Chargers, is a nonconsequential game. The win will not improve their seed position, with the Chiefs already in the playoffs. Hence, the HC is looking to test the bench strength of the defending champions.

Along with Kelce and the superstar QB Mahomes, five others are rested for the upcoming wildcard round in the playoffs. Apart from the duo, WR Rashee Rice, WR Kadarius Toney, CB L’Jarius Sneed, DE Mike Danna, and T Donavan Smith are also inactive for the Chiefs.

Will this gamble of resting Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes pay off in the playoffs? Let us know in the comments.
