Just a few months ago, the Kelce brothers did what most would have thought impossible. The newest guest on their New Heights podcast was a member of the British royal family. But when another member of the Kelce family tried to invite another member of the royalty, it didn’t go so well.

Travis Kelce’s sister-in-law, Kylie Kelce, recently came under fire over using a moniker for one iconic royal on her podcast that netizens found “offensive”.
In the October 1 episode of her podcast ‘Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce’, Kylie addressed the criticism and apologized for addressing Princess Catherine of Wales as “Princess Kate”.
“So, I was unaware that calling Princess Catherine ‘Princess Kate’ was offensive. I didn’t know that. Now I know that. Now I will proceed accordingly. I apologize for the mistake,” Kylie said. “I would like to refer to people in the most respectful way and how they feel respected. So, Princess Catherine, it is, or the Princess of Wales, I apologize. I will get that sorted immediately starting now.”
The criticism came in response to another older episode of Kylie’s podcast, where she showed a clip of Princess Catherine playing a Scottish sport similar to field hockey, called ‘shinty’.
While discussing her background as a field hockey player throughout her school years, even captaining her team at Marlborough College, Kylie casually invited the royal princess to her podcast.
“So, um, Princess Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, if you ever wanted to come on and chitchat about some field hockey and maybe kids, I don’t know. We got a couple things in common.” Kylie Kelce said.
Now, Princess Catherine has been referred to as Kate in the media ever since Prince William used that name during their 2010 engagement interview. But if she has been commonly referred to as Kate, why would Kylie Kelce have to apologize?
Well, there’s no law that makes referring to a British royal with the incorrect title a crime. It is simply socially improper by royal protocol. And considering Kylie wants to bring Princess Catherine on her show, we’re not surprised to see her correct herself.
“Let me emphasize that I would love to speak to the Princess of Wales, OK? Because of many reasons. She is an incredible woman. She has children. She played field hockey. She battled cancer. There are so many things that I would love to speak to her about.”
Kylie may not have anything to worry about. Princess Catherine joked on BBC Radio One that she would answer to “most things.” However, according to Channel 5’s royal correspondent, Simon Vigar, the press is encouraged to use her proper designation when referring to her, instead of calling her Princess Kate.
In any case, there’s a good chance we might actually see her appear on Kylie’s show, considering Princess Katherine’s husband, Prince William famously joined the New Heights podcast, hosted by her husband, Jason, and brother-in-law, Travis, as Kylie pointed out.
“We got a couple things in common, and our husbands chit-chatted on the other podcast, but you could come on this one. I don’t know. Just a thought. It’s a thought. We’d love to have you. No pressure, please,” Kylie added.
On New Heights, Prince William of Wales reminisced about meeting Jason, Travis, and his now-wife, Taylor Swift, at Wembley during the London leg of Swift’s 2024 Eras Tour. He’d attended the concert with his two oldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and even took selfies with the pop star and the Kelce brothers backstage.
Confusion regarding etiquette made an appearance during that interaction as well. Jason recalled being concerned about what to do with the beer he was holding when he met the British royal, unaware of the royal protocols surrounding such meetings. He also mentioned loving the opportunity to meet Princess Charlotte, since Jason and Kylie have four daughters together.
Prince William also talked about his love for soccer or, as he stressed, “football.” While discussing his support of Aston Villa F.C., he even revealed that his father, King Charles, hated the sport.
Kylie admitted in the October 1 episode of her podcast that she didn’t expect Princess Catherine to actually have the time to respond to or accept her invitation. But if she does so, Kylie Kelce will know better this time as to how to address her royal guest.
