Brock Purdy‘s contract extension remained one of the most talked-about stories of the offseason. And it rightly deserved to be. After all, San Francisco cut off several key players just to pay their QB. The NFL world was split right down the middle, with half saying, ‘Pay the man,’ while the other half was pulling out advanced metrics and playoff tape, trying to prove why Mr. Irrelevant wasn’t quite worth a $50+ million extension.

But at the end of the day, the Niners finally handed the 25-year-old a $265 million extension with $165M guaranteed. On Tuesday, the Niners made it official. “Brock is a tremendous leader and a fantastic representative for the 49ers organization. And we are ecstatic to get this deal done,” GM John Lynch said in a statement. Now, after Purdy’s extension, several headlines are exploding, and debates are piling up about the QB’s contract. Amidst all this, two Hall of Fame QBs also weighed in with their two cents. Enter Kurt Warner, the Super Bowl XXXIV MVP and winner. “I know who Brock Purdy is. I love the way he plays the game,” Warner said on Willard & Dibs

Giving Brock his flowers, Kurt added, “He does things that people don’t appreciate and don’t understand about the QB position, things that not everybody can do, just because they may jump higher, run faster, or throw farther than him.In Warner’s eyes, Purdy reads defenses well, makes smart decisions, and handles the little things that truly matter.

Over his three-year NFL career, Brock has started 36 regular-season games and played in a total of 40. The 25-year-old has racked up 9,518 passing yards and scored 64 TDs. In 2023, Purdy led his team on a Super Bowl run, eventually losing to the Chiefs. Even though he was the very last pick in the draft, Purdy has performed significantly better than anyone expected. That’s exactly why the Niners are so committed to him.

Another HOF weighs in on Brock Purdy’s contract saga

Last year in December, former Patriots wideout Julian Edelman, in a conversation with Colin Cowherd on The Herd, gave his two cents on Purdy’s extension talks. Edelman argued that, considering his 2024 season’s performance, Brock looked more like a $30 million guy than a $50 million one. “This year will determine if you are a $30 million quarterback or a $50 million quarterback,” Julian said. “And through the whole year, it looks like he’s a $30 million quarterback. He’s a good football player, but we’re seeing his limitations when guys aren’t playing, and when there are excuses,” he added.

What’s your perspective on:

Did the Niners overpay for Purdy, or is he the future of their franchise?

Have an interesting take?

Fast forward to now, and another Hall of Fame QB has the Niners’ QBs back. Warren Moon, the former Vikings QB and 9-time Pro Bowler, says the Niners offered Brock what any other top 10 QB in the league would earn. Moon suggests that the criticism surrounding Purdy is only because he was the last overall pick. “If you’re a Top 10 quarterback in the league, [the Purdy contract] is what you’re going to get paid. I’m sure there are a lot of arguments about the talent around him, but show me a QB that doesn’t have a lot of talent around him and I’ll show you a QB that’s not very successful,” Warren said.

Back in February, before the Super Bowl, Pro Football Talk’s host Mike Florio also expressed doubts about the Niners’ intention to offer Purdy an extension this year. “Well, I wouldn’t sign him this year. I’d make him play another year. I would make him an offer based upon what we’ve seen so far,” said the NFL analyst.

Well, now that the deal is done, all eyes will be on the Niners’ QB. People will be watching like hawks to see if Brock lives up to the hype. And with the Niners entering the season with a new squad, things are only going to get even more interesting.
