J.J. McCarthy’s absence has allowed Carson Wentz to step in as the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, and things have gone reasonably well. Wentz holds a 2-1 record since taking over the reins. While McCarthy drew early praise, his Week 2 outing exposed some rough edges. Wentz’s veteran poise has brought stability to the offense, and the coaching staff has made clear they’re comfortable riding his play for now. But for now, McCarthy has another worry up his sleeve: his injured ankle.

According to Dr. Jesse Morse, “Now, grade three traditionally goes to the operating room and ends up requiring at least four, sometimes up to six weeks to return. The grade ones and grade twos usually stay out of the operating room and usually return anywhere between two weeks for super Mild, up to four to five weeks for more moderate.”

News now emerges that McCarthy’s rehabilitation could prolong into the summer despite a potential return in Week 9. He admitted that his right ankle’s high-ankle sprain was still not completely healed. The club will not rush him back, according to team sources, and his offseason workload could need to be modified to cater to any lingering implications.

His right ankle and foot motion, which is essential for drop-backs, play-action mechanics, and pocket mobility, are injured. This, in turn, limits McCarthy’s live drills.

“It’s unfortunate and one of those really annoying injuries. But I’m just continuing to work to get to 100% as fast as possible,” McCarthy said

The 22-year-old’s lower-body mechanics and footwork confidence will be tested against upcoming opponents like the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers, who have potent pass-rush groups and quick-edge games. At the same time, a return to less aggressive defenses could conceal persistent constraints. In any case, the ankle problem is a temporary obstacle and a long-term worry.

Wentz’s consistency takes the praise

Coaches and analysts indicate that Carson Wentz is the pick for the time being, as he assumes the starting position for the Minnesota Vikings. The majority of supporters contend that even if J.J. McCarthy is well, Wentz should continue to hold the position.

Wentz has a 2-1 record, a 69% completion rate, and an average of 253 passing yards per game after three starts. Piloting a 2-1 run, he has passed for 759 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. He strengthens his case with every snap, potentially earning additional games. For Coach, the issue is also about making sure McCarthy is healthy before stepping onto the field.

“I don’t think it’s one of those things where it’s, hey, he’s healthy the night before a game, we’re going to throw him out there and say, ‘Hey, go figure it out’ type of thing,” Kevin O’Connell said about McCarthy’s return.

The risks of rushing a quarterback back too soon have been demonstrated by teams like the San Francisco 49ers. Brock Purdy’s hasty comeback from his injuries proved to be damaging. He will need to wait at least another week due to a toe problem.

“If Brock is good to go, I picture him starting. We’ll always do what’s best for him and best for the team, depending on what that situation is that week,” Shanahan said.

That being said, McCarthy’s return merely flips the switch for the Vikings. As Wentz has delivered when given the opportunity.
