Every NFL season puts a team’s depth to the test. For the Minnesota Vikings, the latest setback is hitting hard both on the field and on their wallets. Head coach Kevin O’Connell now faces a crucial decision as he looks to reshape his defense. This comes after Jeff Okudah’s concussion has once again thrown the defense into disarray.

Okudah, who signed a one-year contract with the Vikings this offseason, is still out of action after suffering his second concussion of the season during last Thursday’s loss to the Chargers. Given the situation, the head coach and the front office are expected to explore trade or free-agent options to bolster the cornerback position and avoid a deeper defensive collapse.

NFL insider Albert Breer has reported that the Vikings are in a BUYER mode rather than selling as the trade deadline approaches on Tuesday. He also mentioned that they are particularly on the lookout for a cornerback. This aligns perfectly with O’Connell’s current needs and shows Minnesota’s determination to stay competitive instead of hitting the reset button.

This setback is not just a blow to the defense but also a financial hit. Since Okudah’s entire contract is guaranteed, Minnesota will face a $2.35 million cap hit for a player who might not step onto the field again this year.

Okudah’s struggles to stay healthy now leave O’Connell short-handed heading into a divisional clash with the Detroit Lions. Until O’Connell finds someone, the position is now down to Dwight McGlothern and practice squad veteran Fabian Moreau

For O’Connell, the next move could decide whether the Vikings stay in the fight or slide into a season-long slump.

And as if the defense wasn’t already a problem, the offense hasn’t been much better. Injuries and inconsistency have forced O’Connell to keep shuffling the roster, and now the spotlight shifts from defense to the quarterback position.

Vikings turn back to J.J. McCarthy as quarterback carousel spins again

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation has come full circle. With Carson Wentz sidelined for the season due to a torn labrum and a fractured shoulder socket, the team is once again turning to J.J. McCarthy, kicking off a crucial 10-game stretch.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed McCarthy’s return, noting that the young quarterback is “in a really good place from a health standpoint.” The plan is straightforward. Let him show he’s got what it takes. The Vikings are currently 3-4 and still in the NFC playoff hunt, but this phase is more about assessing talent than chasing a title.

McCarthy’s start to the season has been a bit rocky. He led a comeback against the Bears in Week 1 but struggled in Atlanta the following week. After that, he was out with a high ankle sprain, using his time on the sidelines to study Wentz’s tempo and rhythm.

His completion rate is at 55%, placing him near the bottom of the league. Still, O’Connell emphasizes that the focus is on improving mechanics and making “clear, obvious progress.”

This leaves undrafted rookie Max Brosmer as the only backup. This isn’t exactly a comforting thought for a team that has heavily invested in the quarterback position. ESPN’s Benjamin Solak has suggested the idea of a trade for Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, should Minnesota seek insurance before the deadline.

For O’Connell, who’s earned a reputation as a quarterback whisperer, the message is clear: it’s J.J. or bust. And this time, there’s no safety net.
