Free agent quarterback Cam Newton got candid by claiming Brock Purdy is a “game manager.” The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is in the MVP talks for the 2023 NFL season. Moreover, his team, the 49ers, is topping the NFC West division, and Purdy’s promising gameplay is one of the reasons behind it. But Cam Newton thinks differently about Purdy and the 49ers’ current position. 

Newton also mentioned the league’s top QBs, like Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes, who can change the game, but claimed that Purdy is not a game changer but a game manager.  

Cam Newton gets candid on Purdy

The SFNiners Twitter account shared a video featuring Newton. The free agent QB shared his thoughts, “Lamar Jackson, obviously Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, Brock Purdy, like but Brock. Listen, they’re not winning because of him. He’s managing the game. And if we were to put that in its own, right as game managers Brock Purdy, Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, and really, Dak Prescott, these are game managers, they’re not difference makers.“

Newton further added, “I don’t give a damn what you do. You don’t have to score every time you just don’t have to throw a pick every time, either. If we’re gonna really call a spade, a spade, a game manager is different than a game changer.”

According to Newton, these QBs are game managers, but there are a few QBs that are impact makers. Following the impact makers, this NFL season witnessed several promising gameplays from the league’s top quarterbacks.

The game-changing quarterbacks

In the 2023 NFL season, Tagovailoa tops the list with 3,697 yards, followed by CJ Stroud and Brock Purdy with 3,631 and 3,553 yards, respectively. These young quarterbacks have stamped their presence in the current NFL season, with league veterans like Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson trailing behind them with 3,398 and 2,934 yards, respectively. But still, there’s a wave surrounding these young QBs that they are not game-changers.

Earlier, critics claimed that Purdy’s gameplay is a result of a system set up by the 49ers HC, Kyle Shanahan.
