After graduating from Edwardsville High School in Edwardsville, Illinois, Patterson played college football for the University of Memphis. He made 41 appearances and scored 351 points for the Tigers. In 2019, he was named to the First Team All-Conference and was also listed on the Lou Groza Award Watch List.
In his senior year, Patterson was named the Week 11 AAC Special Teams Player of the Week. He played all 11 games and went 15-of-21 field goal attempts, including tying a school record with a 56-yarder at SMU. The kicker was also invited to the East-West Shrine Bowl and played in the 2021 Reese’s Senior Bowl, making two field goal attempts.
After Memphis, Patterson went undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft and signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2021. His time with the Patriots was long, as he signed with the Detroit Lions in November, as his first stint. The former Tiger recorded two extra points in his NFL debut against the Chicago Bears and made his first field goal against the Minnesota Vikings. His second stint with the Lions came in May 2023. However, he was waived by the team in December.
Between his stints at the Lions, Patterson also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. One of his most famous performances came in the tight 31-30 win against the Los Angeles Chargers, when he scored the game-winning field goal. However, with the signing of Brandon McManus, Patterson was waived. He had another stint with the Jaguars, where he signed a reserve/future contract on Feb. 6. However, it did not go as planned for the kicker, as he lost out to sixth-round draft choice Cam Little.
Riley Patterson played his first stint with the Cleveland Browns in between his two stints at the Jaguars. In his first stint, he only played one game, but was not signed to a reserve contract. His second stint was in 2014, when the team signed him to their practice squad.
After his first stint at the Jaguars, Patterson was claimed off waivers by the Washington Commanders on July 31, 2024, before he was released shortly after on Aug. 22. He then went on to sign for the New York Jets’ practice squad and was promoted to the active roster. But he was released on Nov. 8.
The 26-year-old also had two stints at the Atlanta Falcons. After signing for their practice squad on Nov. 29, Patterson was released four days later. His second stint saw him play three games as a starter. He went 4-for-7 on field goals, including a long of 52. Unfortunately for him, Patterson missed the game-winning 56-yard field goal in Week 17 last season. This season for the Dolphins, Patterson has 58 points on 13-for-15 field goals and a long of 49, in nine games.
Patterson has played for plenty of teams after going undrafted. However, this only shows his commitment to the game and demonstrates perseverance. The 26-year-old is currently on a one-year contract with the Dolphins, and could be looking at an extension with some strong performances on the team.
