Zay Flowers has a supportive clan! The wide receiver for the Baltimore Ravens, Flowers was the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. And, he showed exceptional performance in his rookie season, with 77 receptions and five touchdowns. Interestingly,  Zay grew up with a competitive spirit, all thanks to his 9 brothers and 4 sisters who always had his back.

Originally hailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Zay grew up as the 11th of 14 children. And, things were never easy due to the challenges of growing up in a large family. He talked about the limited resources, adding that they had the difficulty “finding a place to sleep,” as they grew up in a five-bedroom household.

Being the fourth youngest, the siblings were always engaged in healthy competition. Recalling those moments, Flowers has an interesting memory to narrate. He added, “It was competitive every day [in my household]. Every day, we fought to be better at everything. In our house, we had fun with the people we love.”

However, things became difficult for the Flowers siblings when their mother, Jackie Walden, passed away in 2005 due to a fatal head injury. At that time, Zay was only five years old. It was then, they took to their father for support and guidance. Zay has a deep admiration for his father who worked hard to support all the children. “He taught me what hard work is. He always kept me motivated.”

Zay Flowers and his sibling’s close bonding

Family and football form a strong part of Zay Flowers’ DNA. One of his memories dates back to when he was four, as he was clad in huge football pads, playing with his brothers. He recalled, “We would try to run each other over and juke each other out all the time.”

The Flowers sibling’s competitiveness pushed them to always give their best. Be it sports, cooking, or any other domain, they were always trying to outdo each other. Zay remarked, “The only challenge was that we were trying to show who was the best [Flowers] out of the family,” which made it fun growing up.

But, a tragedy marred the family when Zay was in high school. In November 2017, his older brother Martin was tragically murdered. Despite this, he had to persevere to propel his football growth. Honoring his siblings and familial support, Zay has the tattoo “11 of 14” inked on his forearm. He also dons the jersey with No. 4, being the fourth-youngest sibling in his family.
