Shaquil Barrett will not be in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the upcoming season, according to ESPN. The year 2023 was a successful season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It seems like the team wants to make the best of their salary $47 million cap space, with prime players Mike Evans and Baker Mayfield hitting the free trade agency. As a result, Tampa Bay will be releasing the edge rusher Barrett.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the two-time Super Bowl winner will have to look for a new home in the 2024 season. The main reason for this decision is likely to be the finances of the team. Barrett is set to have a cap charge of $14.19 million in the coming season and will receive a bonus of $15.04 million. By undertaking this decision before 1st June, Tampa Bay will save $12.477 million in their salary cap. Now, the main question is, where will Barrett go for the next season?

Barrett has cemented his position as one of the best edge rushers in the league. He has an impressive 59 sacks and 111 assisted tackles in his career. The rusher will be a great addition to any team’s defense, having proven his worth by winning the Super Bowl in 2016 with the Broncos and in 2021 with the Buccaneers.

Barrett will now be joining a new team. Going by cap space, there are two potential landing spots for the rusher in the upcoming season. The Commanders have a cap space of $79.6 million and a NO.2 pick in the Draft. The teams will most likely utilize their pick to get a new quarterback from the rookies. This gives them an opportunity to put another strong man in their defense via trade. The Titans have stated they are open to trading their No.7 position. Along with a $78.5 million cap space, they could start looking at Barret as a good upgrade to the team’s defense.

The New York Jets are also in talks of a linebacker trade, as per the Hudson Reporter. With Leighton Vander Esch’s future uncertain, the Jets are looking to further strengthen their defensive side. Though the current talks are for trading Mosely to the Cowboys, Barrett’s availability could open new talks for the team. Finally, there is Barrett’s previous home, Denver Broncos. Though their cap space is not favorable with the Russell Wilson situation, an edge position is one of their prime needs. Barrett has a good rapport with Denver in the past, helping them to a Super Bowl win, and this reunion might just be what the team needs for the upcoming season.

Wherever Barretr lands next, one thing is for certain: the edge rusher will bring ample experience and energy to the new team. Having his record and Super Bowl experience on his side, it will be interesting to see where we will see the linebacker in the upcoming season.
