Is the ill-fitted deal coming to an end soon? After Aaron Rodgers exited the season with an Achilles tear in his debut game with the New York Jets, the franchise relied on their backup quarterback, Zach Wilson. However, the season didn’t go well with Wilson in terms of his performance, as the team was limited to only seven wins in 2023.

Since then, there has been a buzz related to the Jets’ future, as many believe the franchise needs to change its quarterback. During the game season, third-year signal-caller and former No. 2 overall pick Wilson had faith in his coach, Robert Saleh, as he expressed his wish to be with the team and get the ball. However, Wilson was looking for a new team as the NFL entered its offseason.

The Jets quarterback, Zach Wilson, has been permitted by the team’s general manager, Joe Douglas, to explore trade opportunities after three challenging seasons. This move indicates the team is open to letting go of Wilson, and now he is free to negotiate with any of the other 31 NFL franchises. In a press conference at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, Douglas said, “I’ve had good conversation with his agent Brian Ariel; we’ve given them permission to talk to other teams about a trade. I’m going to circle back with Brian at some point either this week or next week, just to see how those conversations go, but other than that, there’s nothing else to report.

In his show (joined virtually from NFL Combine), Jets’ fan and NFL analyst Rich Eisen discussed this new team move with NFL sportscaster and his spouse, Suzy Shuster. He pointed out that the market value for Wilson is influenced by what the San Francisco 49ers received for Trey Lance. Lance was chosen right after Wilson, and the 49ers acquired a fifth-round pick from Dallas for him.

Eisen speculated that the Jets might get a similar or possibly lower value for the young quarterback since it’s evident that the Jets won’t retain him. The primary concern for the Jets now is figuring out their QB situation for the upcoming season. The 54-year-old analyst humorously mentioned the need for someone “who can grow a five o’clock shadow by five o’clock,” after Aaron Rodgers, emphasizing the Jets’ challenges and uncertainties in determining their future at the QB role.

On the other hand, despite being a second overall pick three years ago, young Wilson faces challenges, including injuries, accuracy issues, and concerns about his leadership. The Jets even acquired Rodgers as a potential successor, and Wilson was expected to learn from him.

However, the abrupt ending of the four-time MVP’s season brought Wilson under scrutiny and criticism. So, which team will be interested in acquiring Wilson?

Five potential landing spots for Zach Wilson!

During his offseason trade, Zach Wilson had the opportunity to find his place as a backup in these five teams: Buffalo BillsKansas City ChiefsPhiladelphia EaglesLas Vegas Raiders, and Los Angeles RamsJosh Allen, a friend of Aaron Rodgers, supports Wilson. While trading Wilson to a division rival may not be ideal for the Jets, it would benefit the quarterback as his playing style matched Allen. And the team may benefit from adding long-term potential to the QB position.

On the other hand, Wilson could learn from Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, especially, as the Chiefs lack a long-term backup for Mahomes. Jalen Hurts may prefer a more established backup, but Wilson could bring competition for Adian O’Connell. The Eagles have a history of accumulating quarterback assets, and Wilson’s mobility aligns with Hurts’ playing style. Furthermore, the connection between Joe Douglas and Howie Roseman might influence the decision. The Rams, known for quarterback projects, might consider a younger developmental option, given Carson Wentz’s impending free agency, despite Matthew Stafford being the entrenched starter.
