Former NFL quarterback and 2012 Pro Bowler Robert Griffin III didn’t hold back after Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from a WNBA game this Sunday. Griffin took to social media to criticize the political activist and former NBA center’s approach to the ongoing debate around transgender athletes in women’s sports.

“Enes Kanter is causing more harm and damage to the women he claims he is trying to protect. THIS is lame,” Griffin wrote on X.

The incident that prompted Griffin’s comment unfolded Sunday night at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, during a game between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky. Kanter Freedom, sitting courtside in a black T-shirt reading “WOMAN noun. adult human female,” got into a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud late in the third quarter.

After Cloud converted a layup, she walked toward Kanter Freedom and began yelling and pointing in his direction. He stood up, spread his arms, and stepped toward the court before security and several Sky players stepped in to separate the two. Kanter Freedom was then escorted out of the arena as the crowd booed. After being removed, Kanter Freedom posted his reaction on X.

“I just got kicked out of a @WNBA game for supporting WOMEN! Let that sink in, AMERICA!” he wrote, adding, “It’s always women hating on other women.”

Kanter Freedom, who played 11 seasons in the NBA before retiring, has spent recent weeks inserting himself into the WNBA’s ongoing debate over transgender inclusion. He had also sent a letter declaring himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft. The move was widely viewed as a stunt meant to draw attention to what he believes are unclear eligibility rules in the league.

Before Sunday’s game, Kanter Freedom was also part of a rally supporting Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. In a recent ESPN profile, Cunningham said she wanted to “protect young girls in a locker room” who “shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

Kanter Freedom and Cloud have clashed publicly before this incident too.

The two exchanged pointed public remarks in 2023 after Cloud criticized USA’s rights, with Kanter Freedom offering to fly her to countries with stricter human rights records. Cloud responded at the time, asking him to extend the same respect for her that he’d asked others to show him. Sky players kept their comments on the incident short after the game.

“There was just a fan incident, and the security handled it. We’re going to just focus on the game,” forward Azura Stevens told reporters.

Griffin’s criticism fits into a larger debate around Kanter Freedom’s approach. While he presents his public confrontations as part of his advocacy, critics argue they can shift attention toward him rather than the issues he is trying to raise. Kanter Freedom, meanwhile, has continued to describe incidents like Sunday’s as proof of the position he is pushing.
