Former San Francisco 49ers star Terrell Owens is mourning the loss of his father, and he shared the news with his followers in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“He’s gone. He’s finally gained his wings,” Owens wrote, alongside photos of the two of them together. “… The past few years have been filled with heartache. Lost my cousin due to a drunk driver 2 years ago, my aunt Bink to cancer literally a year ago today and now him. This hurts.

“Despite any situation, I’ve always loved my dad. I’m so glad I had the chance to tell him how much I loved him. He wasn’t perfect, and that’s okay. Neither am I. You’ll be deeply missed by many. There would be no ‘TO’ without him. Love you, Dad! Rest In Peace. Thank you.”

Terrell Owens had a tough childhood. For a long time, he did not know who his father was, and grew up with a very strict grandmother. Owens didn’t know until he was 11 years old that his father, L.C. Russell, lived right across the street from him. However, that relationship seems to have mended with time.

The outpouring of support was immediate.

“Condolences my brother,” NBA star Dwight Howard wrote in the comments.

Former NFL free agent Marcedes Lewis posted, “Love & Light brother.”

“I’m sorry for ya loss T,” Eagles icon LeSean McCoy commented.

“Sending love 🙌,” former quarterback Matt Leinart wrote.

” ❤️🙏🏾You carry his legacy and name bro 💪🏾👊🏾!” Allan Houston wrote. “Strong in the Lord.”

Actor Terry Crews also sent in his condolences with a prayer emoji and some dove emojis.

Right now, Owens is just a son saying goodbye to his father, and the football world has shown up to make sure he knows he isn’t going through it by himself.
