Terry Bradshaw has never been shy about discussing the difficult parts of his life. But the Pro Football Hall of Famer recently opened up about one of the most complicated moments he experienced away from football, revealing why his mother’s death did not bring the tears he expected.

Speaking with Lewis Howes, the host of The School of Greatness podcast, Bradshaw recalled his reaction to his mother’s passing in August 2023, admitting how surprised he was by his emotional response compared to losing his dog, James.
“My mother, when she died, I didn’t shed a tear,” Bradshaw said. “Now, you don’t think that still bothers me. Why? When my dog died, James died, and I picked his casket up at the vet when I came off the plane and took it, put it in the back seat, and I got in the car, Tammy (his wife) sitting there, and I just started bawling uncontrollably over a dog.”
For Bradshaw, however, the lack of tears was not as simple as it might appear. He explained that his relationship with his mother, Novis Genoa Gay Bradshaw, carried years of complicated emotions, including resentment that he had never fully addressed.
“Nobody did more for their mother. Nobody put up more from their mother,” Bradshaw said. “Nobody tried to make her life better than I did.”
Though his relationship with his mother was complicated, Novis was a major presence in Bradshaw’s childhood. She raised Terry and his two brothers, Gary and Craig, while their father, William “Bill” Bradshaw, was often away for work. The family was based in Louisiana, where Novis was also active in the church and spent much of her life as a homemaker.
Bradshaw said he often felt that his efforts to provide for his mother were not fully appreciated. He recalled conversations in which she questioned why he traveled so much or why he was not home more often. However, he admitted he kept his response to himself at the time.
“I wanted to say, well, I got to travel that much because I got to make this money to pay for that house I just built for you or buy that Mercedes Benz,” Bradshaw said. “I got to pay for all this stuff.”
“I didn’t say that. I say it now,” Bradshaw added. “It p—–d me off. Why don’t you just appreciate what I’m doing? I love you to death. That hasn’t changed.”
Novis died in August 2023 at the age of 94, with a lifetime centered on her family and church community.
Bradshaw’s admission does not suggest that he lacked love for his mother. Instead, his recollection points to years of unresolved feelings surrounding their relationship and the relief that accompanied her passing.
The 78-year-old Bradshaw has spent decades in the public eye, first as the quarterback who led the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl victories and later as a longtime television personality. Away from football, he has also spoken openly about depression, therapy, and the personal struggles that shaped his life.
