Former quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s historic lowest QB passer rating for a Super Bowl win resurfaced this week after Drake Maye’s Super Bowl loss. In comparison to the MVP candidate’s showing, the Steelers legend’s past performance was used as a comparison during a media discussion.
“I think he’s the worst Super Bowl winning, I think that’s the worst Super Bowl winning quarterback performance since probably Ben Roethlisberger against the Seahawks,” Steven Cheah said on Wake Up Barstool on Monday, linking Maye’s loss to Super Bowl XL.

The comment came during a broader discussion about quarterbacks who won the Super Bowl despite struggling individually. Cheah’s remark pointed to a game the Steelers won, but one that is still criticized years later because of Roethlisberger’s performance against Seattle.
Roethlisberger’s Super Bowl XL outing has long been debated despite Pittsburgh’s 21-10 win over the Seahawks. His zero touchdowns and 123 passing yards seem almost unreal considering his career statistics.
Drake Maye finished the Super Bowl on Sunday, completing 27 of 43 passes for 295 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Maye was also sacked six times for 43 yards, eventually earning him a QBR of just 16.3.
Despite that comparison, Roethlisberger played 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, won two Super Bowls, and finished with 64,088 passing yards and 418 touchdowns. He made several Pro Bowls and ranks fifth all-time in both yards and touchdowns.
The legend became the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl in 2006 and later helped the Steelers win another title in Super Bowl XLIII. That game ended with a late touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes.

Most people already know that one Super Bowl performance does not define Roethlisberger’s career. Still, moments like this show how past games can resurface and bring criticism, even years after a player has retired.
Big Ben’s Super Bowl record stands following Maye’s loss in Super Bowl LX
Ben Roethlisberger’s spot in NFL history is safe for now. Nearly 20 years after setting the record as the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, the former Steelers star keeps that mark following Drake Maye’s loss in Super Bowl LX. Roethlisberger had addressed the possibility before the game during an episode that aired at the end of January of his podcast.
“I’m fine with it. Records are meant to be broken,” Roethlisberger said on the Footbahlin podcast “To me, it’s more about the Steelers-Patriots, we’re still tied for the most championships. I just don’t want them to pass us.”
Maye faced constant pressure from Seattle’s defense. Key mistakes came at bad moments, and despite some help from teammates, New England could not recover or gain control of the game.
Maye entered the game at 23 years and 162 days and would have broken the record if New England had beaten Seattle. Instead, the Patriots lost 29-13, leaving Roethlisberger’s mark untouched. Roethlisberger won his first Super Bowl at 23 years and 340 days, a record he took from Tom Brady back in 2006.
Former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch also noted the history involved, pointing out the record would have fallen against the same Seahawks team Roethlisberger beat years ago.
For now, Roethlisberger gets to enjoy his place in the record books a little longer, with Mahomes, Brady, and Russell Wilson still trailing him on the list.
