After an underperforming season, the Los Angeles Chargers decided to go for a shift in hierarchy by appointing Jim Harbaugh from the University of Michigan. Harbaugh joined the Chargers with a new mindset, philosophy, and staff, hoping to influence a cultural change at the franchise. As the NFL offseason progresses, speculation swirls around the future of running back Austin Ekeler, who has now become a free agent.

Linebacker and San Diego Chargers legend Shawne Merriman took to Twitter as he had some words of advice for Jim Harbaugh concerning Ekeler, who, according to him, deserves a second chance. Harbaugh has praised the veteran earlier, expressing his desire to have the running back on his team. Ekeler had shifted out of favor under Giff Smith, struggling with inconsistency.

NFL legend Shawne Merriman analyzed the reality of the Chargers after an underwhelming season. Having played as a linebacker himself, he has reaffirmed his belief in Austin Ekeler, pointing out that the player has already showcased his worth in the NFL. I would’ve liked to see Ek under the new system he’s already shown he can produce, but almost everybody regressed last year. This year, we’ll find out who’s who.” he captioned his tweet in response to a news confirming Austin Ekeler’s free agency. However, Merriman’s perspective offers depth as veteran players can more easily adapt to transitions and help the entire team in the process than a newly drafted player. He also talks about how the entire team underperformed, while Ekeler did not regress, proving his bravery. If not Ekler, what are some other options available to Harbaugh during the draft?

Potential options for Jim Harbaugh amidst Ekeler’s uncertainty

According to NFL Media, Jim Harbaugh is planning to strengthen the LA Chargers’ defense, as he plans to bring in the former 49ers star, NaVorro Bowman, to be their new linebackers coach. While the Chargers also deal with massive salary cap concerns, with them already being $36 million above the cap, they have to be judicious in their approach to equipping new players and staff. This could also be an unfortunate situation for Austin Ekeler, who, despite his stable performances, could be dropped from the team.

Potential replacements for the Chargers include Leonard Fournette of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He put up 668 yards on 189 attempts and scored three touchdowns. Rex Burkhead  is another good option who plays for Houston, Texas. Irrespective of not playing much last season, but in 2021, he put up 427 yards on 122 carries and three touchdowns. J.D. McKissic is another potential player who had 365 yards on 85 carries with one rushing score. If Ekeler’s future with the Chargers cannot continue, then these potential options can lead the Chargers to glory. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
