Russell Wilson’s arrival at the Denver Broncos has been a blockbuster deal for the massive amount the franchise decided to spend on the player. Nonetheless, it has attracted much criticism from analyst Shannon Sharpe, who thinks he could’ve gotten a better deal elsewhere.

According to Sharpe’s breakdown, Wilson saved more money than his actual worth with the Broncos, leaving them in a complicated situation. However, the deal was not as simple as many perks were included for the Broncos, including the first-round picks.

Shannon Sharpe’s analysis of the sumptuous salary of Russell Wilson

While other top quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers ($40.32 million) and Ryan ($40.53 million) have a combined salary less than Russell Wilson’s, it casts a heavy question on the Denver Broncos’ spending strategy. However, as we dive deeper into the deal’s details, we understand that the Seahawks received a treasure trove of assets in exchange for Wilson. He went as far as calling the deal an “Epic fail.” Moreover, his two-year tenure with the Broncos saw him rake a staggering $124 million just in salaries.

Their perks were massive, from the first two-round picks to two second-round picks and a fifth-round pick over multiple drafts. They also relinquished players like tight-end Noah Fant, quarterback Drew Lock, and defensive tackle Shelby Harris. Similarly, their decision to offload Wilson had many reasons, including needing more time to offer the contracts he demanded during extension negotiations. Not only did the Seahawks pull off a masterstroke, but they also turned an unwanted asset into a bed of blessings with draft picks and promising players.

Sharpe’s criticism of the Broncos’ management

Apart from appreciating the Broncos’ management, he was also critical of their perceived misstep by putting a hefty price tag on them and their depletion of valuable assets, leaving them worse after him. Sharpe explained his analysis by saying, “You got a coat that you no longer want to wear, and you know what somebody says? Oh man, I give you $50,000 for that coat. You’re like, okay, hell, I was looking to get rid of it anyway. Right, that’s what the Seattle Seahawks did for Russell.” While initial excitement from the fans grazed his acquisition, the future did not prove to be very kind to them.
