Merriman expressed his discontent on social media regarding the proposed contract of Prescott, highlighting concerns over its exorbitant magnitude. In a tweet, he wrote, “I love seeing guys making money, but sorry, this doesn’t warrant a contract of this magnitude and creating a gap between other players. QBs are the most important position on the field, but this is ridiculous and something has to change.”

While some expect a quick resolution, ESPN‘s suggestion of a six-month timetable has left many confused. The Cowboys, however, find themselves in a difficult situation. Prescott’s looming $59.45 million salary cap hit severely limits the team’s ability to make significant moves during free agency. Furthermore, Prescott’s contract includes clauses that prevent the Cowboys from trading or tagging him without an extension agreement.

Prescott is set to receive a $5 million roster bonus before the fifth day of the new league year (March 18). If the Cowboys were to agree to an extension, it needs to happen before that deadline. Moreover, if the 2023 passing TD leader decides to leave in free agency next year, the Cowboys would take a $36.4 million hit in dead money for the 2025 season, Ari Meirov reports.
