Greg Roman is a big part of the Harbaugh family hopping between his service for Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh. Roman had served Jim Harbaugh during his time with the San Francisco 49ers before joining John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens in 2017 as senior offensive assistant and TE coach. He was promoted to OC in 2019 but left the program in January 2023 after a continuous decline in the Ravens offense.
After spending 13 months away from coaching, Jim Harbaugh swoops in to rescue Greg Roman with his new HC role with the Los Angeles Chargers. Appointing Roman as the OC and Jesse Minter as the DC, Harbaugh is consistently building a winning team by bringing a staff with whom he had great experience with. Roman outlined his thoughts on why the Chargers were the best landing role for him.

On a recent YouTube episode on Los Angeles Chargers, Greg Roman sat down with Chargers reporter Hayley Elwood to talk about why he left John Harbaugh and the Ravens and joined his younger brother Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers. The 51-year-old said, “It’s a bit of a no-brainer. I’ve got a history with Jim, a ton of respect for him. Justin Herbert’s always been a player that I really admired… I think there’s a huge potential here.”
Greg Roman not only had a history with Jim Harbaugh in the NFL. He joined Harbaugh as an associate HC at Stanford for two seasons for 2009 and 2010 when he was the head coach. When Jim Harbaugh left to become the 49ers HC in 2011, he followed suit to become his OC till 2014. During their stint in San Francisco, they clinched three NFC Championship titles and a Super Bowl appearance. And after almost a decade, the two reunited, and with elite QB Justin Herbert on the team and Harbaugh assembling all the best staff, it looks like the team has “potential” as an SB winning team.

Roman closes one Harbaugh chapter and reopens another
Unlike the success he saw with Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers, Greg Roman struggled in his role as the OC with the Ravens where the team’s scoring went down from 33.2 points per game to 20.6 points per game from 2019 to 2022. Roman moved on from the Ravens after releasing a statement that read, “After visiting with Coach [John] Harbaugh and after huddling with my family, I have decided that now is the right time to move on from the Ravens so that I can explore new challenges and opportunities.”

While Greg Roman may not have found success with the Ravens, there is a good chance that things could turn around for him in LA. Considering his history with Jim Harbaugh and his enthusiasm to work with star QB Justin Herbert whom Harbaugh calls the “crown jewel,” it could be the beginning of another formidable offense for their opponents. Perhaps Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman might be able to complete their unfinished business of winning a Super Bowl this time.
