Moments ago, NFL insider Adam Schefter posted on X about Russell Wilson’s plans to sign with the Steelers according to league sources. But it seems like this time he was beaten to the punch in breaking the news. Schefter’s post read, “Wilson will sign a team-friendly, one-year deal in which the Broncos will wind up paying $38 million of his salary while Wilson wears the black and yellow.”

Russell Wilson joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2012 for 10 seasons, even winning a Super Bowl for them. He then joined the Denver Broncos in 2022 in a $245 million five-year extension as part of the trade-and-salary deal. But after his controversial last season, unrest has broken out leading to him seeking out a new franchise.

Rumors have been circulating that Wilson is highly likely to land with the Pittsburgh Steelers if and when he’s released by the Broncos. Now the breaking news is that the rumors have been put to rest as Wilson will be playing with the Steelers. In response to this news, Antonio Brown posted, “I broke this news #CTESPN but no credit given.” The retired star also posted another message on X saying, “CTESPN broke the news 2 days ago.”

As is proved by Antonio Brown, the news about Wilson’s one-year contract with the Steelers previously appeared on CTESPNNetwork on March 8. The Broncos cut off Wilson although they’ll have $85 million hit in dead cap money over the next two years. So, even if he’s playing with the Steelers, the Broncos will pay him $39 million which they owe him in the 2024 season. But why would the Broncos put themselves in this complicated position?

The reason why the Broncos let go of Russell Wilson

When Russell Wilson joined the Broncos in 2022 under Nathaniel Hackett, he sank as one of the worst NFL QBs going 5-12. The season resulted in him getting sacked for a record 55 times with a career-worst passer rating of 84.4. He finished the season with 16 TDs and 11 interceptions. Last season wasn’t a promising year either as he finished 66.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards along with 26 TDs and eight interceptions.

Retired Broncos guard Mark Schlereth said of the 35-year-old, “Russell Wilson is garbage. As a player… You cannot win championship, you cannot win consistently with Russell Wilson playing quarterback.” However, Wilson has already shown his excitement for the next chapter of his football career as he previously stated, “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do. God’s got me. I’m excited for what’s next.” Sometimes, a team change can change the destiny of a player. Hopefully, his run in Pittsburgh will reinstate his former glory like when he first joined the Seahawks to earn the NFL Rookie of the Year throwing 26 TD passes.
